A Statement
On ''Centre Extension Fund Campaign''
In afew days the Centre Extension Fund Campaign for $75,000.00 will be launched and the Jewish Community given an opportunity to meet a long outstanding obligation to its youth. ^
Everywhere on this continent, Jewish Centres and YMHA's have so amply demonstrated th^eir valiie to the community; that prieparations are under way for new buildings and extended facilities. A real Centre program, cateriiig to children and young people 6f all ages will make si vital contribution to the development of a strong community.
Club grbupsj creative activitieis, wholesomie rec tion, Jewish programs, are all part ot a centre scheme. Through democratic participation in group life and the development of a kinship with thidr own people the youth will be helped to become responsible, consc^^ ous members of the community, and will make their contribution to its vtrelfare. We must make all this possible through the provision of recreational facilities so that the Jewish youth may be drawn to the Gentire for their recreational and social n^ids.
There is general agreement that a Centre for our youth is necessary and desirable. There has beieh sx^ questioning, however, of the timing of the cmi;irpaign. Some point out that overseas commitment are heayy and that local obligations incurred through the coia-struction of three new buildings in 1947 and 1948 have not yet been liquidated. They suggest waiting for a more opportune time. Unfortunately no more opportune tinie can be foreseen in the near future. Overseas demands are likely to increase rather than decrease during the coming years, and no one would be so optimistic as to predict an improvement in business conditions. Nor are mortgages on present buildings likely to be paid off in a short time.
The committee was faced with three alternatives: (1) indefinite postponement; (2) a campiEugn for a new building; (3) a campaign for an addition.
In view of our many years of neglect of our youth, the first alternative had to be discarded. In cognizance of the recent heavy demands on the community's purse, a new building which would C5)st approximately a quarter of a million dollars, was unthinkable. A modest campaign seemed the only practical choice, and this was held off until 1949 because of the other capital campaigns conducted in 1948. At a meeting held in October, to which all organizations were invited to send rei»resentatiyes, the jirpposition^'Wa^

Organization to proceed with the campaign. If the community can be represented as having expressed itself, then it has spoken in favor of the project. To criticize now is to obstruct a worthy endeavor and to continue to deny our youth what other communities have given theirs.
The $75,000.00 which is the campaign's obj<»ctive, will erect a sizeable gymnasium and auxiliary facilities. It will enable us to develop a program to meet the needs of our young people and to play a positive role in their development as members of the Jewish Community.
We appeal to the community in the conviction that this cause merits whole-hearted support.

''Dagania" Chapter (Labor Zionist)
(by Mi Chernov)
Open Meeting Draws. Crowd
A capacity audience attended the last open meethig of the «Dagania" Chapter (Labor Zionist) h^d ai the Schara Tzedeck Auditorium on Sunday, January 9.
Dr. Paul Kligman in welcoming the gathering, stressed the importance of the work performed by the Histadruth in Israel. The Dagania group have pledged themselves to work wholeheartedly with the Histadruth movement, he stated, and its life giving work deserves the cooperation and support of one and all.
The discussion group of "This Is Our Story", with Mr. Lou Harowitz as moderator, then presented the main program of the evening.
With the assistance of Messrs. Aser Harowitz, Aser Rothstein, Julius Shore, Zieva Zalik, Dick Newman and Morris Chernov, as the commentators, the audience was shown what an actual radio program looks like, when it is broadcast.
The subject under discussion, was the actions of Great Britain in Palestine smce the Balfour Declaration to the present day, and how each move that Britain made had a definite pattern and final conclusion, which has not changed one iota since the Balfour Declaration. •
The moderator and his panel covered the subject very fidly, and their presentation was extremely interesting. This was attested to by the very lively question, and answer period in which the auHi^ce participate, and in which the moderator and his panel acquitted themselves very favorably. (
The program was concluded with the showing of an excellent film. A short cartoon pleased everyone, and "The House In The Desert", a true story of the perseverance of the Palestinian Chalutzim, thrilled the audience. Beautifully filmed and narrated, the film depicted the growth of a colony near the Dead Sea. An area that everyone said was impossible to cultivate. But Israeli pluck, perseverance and hard work produced a thriving settlement of over 150 people, cultivating an area of over 200 acres.
Refreshments were served with the assistance of the Pioneer Women groups, and the wives of the members.
Plans are now being formulated for our next open meeting to be held on Sunday, Feb. 6. The exact location and type of program will be given in future issues of the Bulletm. If you have enjoyed our past meetings, be sure to keep the night of Feb. 6 open. An interesting and entertaining evening is assiured one and all.
The committee was pleased fo see a goodly number of gentiles present at this last meeting, and their questions and comments showed that as well as enjoying the presentation, they were also members of our radio audience.
