Some Proj^osals for the Community's Future
In setting- about the organization ol a Welfare Fund for Vancouver, which it is hoped will eventually benefit and include all Jewish organizational jirojects in the city, the Vancouver Jewish Administrative Organization is providing a service long needed in this coniinunity. The course now being followed is in keeping with the i^attern established by Jewish community councils and administrative organizations in other large cities in Canada and United States.
Each of us can now look forward to the time when we will he able to make all our tlonations and contributions to Jewish welfare causes in a lump sum. The projected Welfare Fund will not only Ijenefit the man who gives but save endless hours of repetitive campaign work, canvassing and foot-slogging.
Another primary function that has yet to be fulfilled by the Administrative Organization which is at least as important as the Welfare Fund is that set forth in the first object of the Organization:
"To promote the peace, order and good government of the Vancouver Jewish Ceiniisunity, and to be the official spokesman on behalf of the said Community."
Jn the past few years a number of organizations have, of their own volition, and under their own direction, undertaken various building projects the cost of which has reached the staggering figure of .'i>l,()00,0()0. There is no denying the great need for these l)uildings and the people who initiated and carried through this fine work are deserving of every recognition for their efforts. But the time has come when the situation regarding our Jewish institutions and establishments in Vancouver must be seriously re-assessed. The yearly expenditmes for the upkeep of these builds alone will not fall far short of six figures.
In other cities the building program of the Jewish community was undertaken over a 10, 15 or even 20 year period. Here most of it has been done during the past two years.
Despite the fact that this building program was undertaken during the recent boom period, it placed a great strain on the resources of the Jewish community. It is unfortunate that these building projects were not begun a few years earlier so that the major part of the costs could have been written off during the boom years. As the situation stands however, we now have to pay for boom period expenditures during what we hope will (at best) be normal years. In other words we have to pay for these things not out of excess profits but out of normal taxable returns.
Artist Tells How Cavalcade of Jewish Music Was Born
The Cavalcade of Jewish Music comes to Vancouver on Wednesday, April 6th as an innovation in the realm of cultural and musical events.
During a recent interview with the two stars who created this program, Susie Michael and Maurice Friedman gave the underlying basis for the origin of this unique contribution to the world of art and drama.
. "We created the Cavalcade of Jewish Music for many different reasons" said Maurice Friedman. "As Americans v.'c felt there was a real need for such a program for we know that this country is a huge melting pot composed of dozens of minority groups. Each group has come here with his own vivid, expressive culture and creed to enrich and strengthen this land. To be unprejudiced and loyal citizens of this great Democracy each of us must lend a listening ear and an open mind to the contributions of every minority group. Jewish culture we know is a very ancient one and America has much to gain by listening to what our people have created in the thousands of years we have lived. That is one of the primary purposes for the creation of the Calvalcade of Jewish Music ... to interpret Jewish culture through the colorful medium of its music."
lo carry on in this self-appointed mis-sicm."
The Cavalcade of Jewish Music is being brought to Vancouver under the distinguished sponsorship of Vancouver B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation, on Wednesday, .^pril 6,.at 8.30 p.m. at the Schara Izedeck Auditorium.
As a service to the community arrangements have been made for a special chiltlren's program to be presented !)y the "Cavalcade of Jewish Music" at the Talmud Torah Auditorium at 4.1;) p.m. on the afternoon of April fith.

Under these circumstances it would appear that the time is ripe to reorganize the Vancouver Jewish Aclministrative Organization to make it a more effective and representative body capable of dealing with all problems on a comnumity-wide basis.
This reorganization would call for the establishment of the strongest possible board made up of men experienced in leadership and intimately acquainted with the history and background of the entire conununity. The board should include more than the representatives appointed by the various organizations. The president of every organization should also attend and actively participate. The comnuuiity should be able to draw on the best in its human resoiuces in this new crucial period.
Re-established on a stronger basis the Administrative Organization could embark on a survey of the financial circumstances, building, maintenance and operational costs of every establishment in the community. If and when any particular institution might begin to flounder it would be possible to come to its assistance with full comnmnity backing. Armed with the findings of the survey the revitalized Organization could also take steps to regulate future building projects and expansion plans for the conununity.
The establishment of a strong board to lead the work of the Administrative Organization would help it to achieve the stattis it should have. It would also help to win the support which is so essential to the success of the Welfare Fund.
This may soimd like a call to the oldtimers to return to active organizational life . . . well, it is partly that. But we will also require the energetic assistance and support of the newcomers and young men growing up in the comnuinity who must prepare themselves to step in and take over the reins of leadership.
All in all, what is required at this time is a unified effort on the pait of all groups and organizations, with the support of the new generation as well as the old, to ensure the forward course of Jewish community life in Vancouver.
I give this somewhat apologetically too. You see, i was born and bred in America so I feel I can speak authoritatively though I musr confess with genuine regret at that. Many of our young people today know only that they have been born Jews but because they have not had the opportunity to become aware of their beautiful cultural heritage they develop great inferiority complexes and inhibitions every time their ancestry is questioned. If they could become acquainted with the wealth and beauty of their . culture they would be so much happier and could walk with dignity wherever they are."
"Hence you can see" smilingly concluded baritone Friedman, "that we have assiuned a tremendous respoiisi-bility by disseminating Jewish culture through the meditnn of song, music and English narrative.
However, we are grateful that our pioneering efforts have been so successful and we owe it all to our wonderful audiences."
"The warm hearts and willing ears of the himdreds of thousands of people, Jews and non-Jews who had come to hear us and to applaud us, give us the strength and inspiration
