Exercise Your Voting Right
This vkreek the citizens of Vancouver and British Columbia go to the polls for the first of two elections.
Since the Bulletin is the organ of the Vancouver Jewish community, among whom every shade of political opinion is to be found, this paper cannot take a position in favor of any one party or any particular candidate.
By the same token, it is proper that our pages should be opened to the advertising and publicity of all parties and candidates.
The Bulletin urges all the Jewish people of Vancouver to be sure to exercise their democratic voting rights.
We also suggest that before going out to vote on election day, every Jewish voter should try and sift out for himself the real issues from the welter of propaganda with which we are once again being deluged in this election campaign.
We should try to ascertain which candidates stand squarely for the full equality of all Canadian citizens, and particularly for the abolishment of every vestige of discrimination or inequality in our own province. Only for people such as these, should we cast our ballots in the provincial election on Wednesday, June 15th.
First Jewish Candidate
Although as stated above, this paper cannot take a position in favor of a particular candidate, we feel called upon nevertheless to draw to the attention of our readers the fact that a Jewish candidate is presenting himself for office in this provincial election. This candidate is Irving S. Finkleman, who is running as an Independent in Vancouver-Burrard. This is believed to be the first time that. a Jewish candidate is standing for provincial office.
Community Serving Agency Merits Community Support
People are coming to appreciate that organizations and agencies which give service to the entire community should be the responsibility of the entire community. It is proper, for example, that the Community Centre, which exists to serve everyone, should be supported by everyone. The same applies to our educational institutions and to the Jewish Family Welfare Bureau. These institutions promote the welfare of the community—and the welfare of the community is everybody's business.
With the establishment of a Welfare Fund in Vancouver it is now possible for one contribution to show both devotion to the Jewish causes overseas and at the same time support for local institutions. The latter, by virtue of their inclusion in the United Jewish Appeal have now become everyone's responsibility.
It is regrettable however that one of our most important services, the care of the aged, remains outside the concern of the total community. The management of the Jewish Home for the Aged prefers to keep that institution outside of the Welfare Fund. It is unfortunate that an agency which is so valuable to the community cannot, through the accepted channels of the Welfare Fund, receive the support of the total community.—L.
Circle games are one of the very enjoyable interludes for children attending the Day Camp being sponsored by the Community Centre tlds summer. A considerable number of regilstra-tions have already been received, but there Is still some room for more. Parents interested in sending their children to Day Camp should phone the Community Centre, C£. 1168.
AUSTRIA EXTENDS TIME Limit for Restitution Claims—
VIENNA (WJA)—Following repre-sentations made by the World Jewish Congress, the Austrian Cabinet, meeting this week, has decided to extend until December 31, 199, the time limit for the filing of restitution clams in respect of "aryanised property" sold by Jews under duress to individuals, in as much as such property can be identified. The dead-line for the presentation of such claims had been extended by six months earlier this year.

This is revealed ii. /tudy just published by the Research Department of the Canadian Jewish Congress, which lists as the principal reasons for this development the ageing of the Jewish population, the decrease in the average number of children in the Jewish family, the decrease in Jewish immigration between 1922 and 1945 and the drop in the Jewish birthrate in Canada in general (from 20.5 per 1,000 in 1921 to 14.3 per 1,000 in 1941).

Letters From Readers
iiiiiiiiiiii
To the Editor:
It was a pleasant surprise to read in the June 2nd edition of the Bulletin that a member of our community, namely, Mr. Irving S. Finkleman, has offered to stand as an Independent Candidate in the forthcoming Vancouver - Burrard Provincial Election.
It is my considered opinion that, if elected, he will bring honor to his riding and our community in particular. He has the moral fortitude to stand up and fight. His years of service to the community, his interests in all peoples, his understanding of the many problems confronting all of us, his ability to render service, should make him an able representative. He is indeed, worthy of the active support of everyone in the Vancouver-Burrard riding.
Sincerely yours,
FRED ASH.
1646 Alma Road, Vancouver, B.C.
To the Editor:
You no doubt know that the writer of this letter has been a subscriber to your paper for over 15 years.
We have always been very deeply interested in anything pertaining to your splendid race—and very sympathetic towards the intense sufferings which have come upon you—as a people. As we have read of the progress you have made in Palestine—our hearts have swelled with pride at your achievements and—with you—we rejoiced when we heard the glad news of the establishment of the STATE OF ISRAEL—and we are assured of the rapid growth and success of THAT STATE— because— THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, ISAAC and JACOB IS WITH YOU—and—the due time for His favor to return to Israel is HERE. Furthermore, no nation nor league of Nations can thwart His will and purpose.
Recently I have had the pleasure oU reading two books—viz—BEHIND THE SILKEN CURTAIN— by Bartley C Crum, Member of the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry on Palestine—and—THE BIRTH OF ISRAEI^ by Jorge
mil
I Garcia-Granados, Member of the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine, and Chief of the Guatemalan Delegation to the Un-»ted Nations. These two books are fery illuminating—and I sincerely trust you will pardon me—a Gentile—from suggesting to you that these two books would be a very valuable asset to your Jewish Community Library (providing you have not already included same) and be a marvellous enlightenment to all our Jewish friends — both young and old. These two books reveal the truth about all the intrigue and counter-intrigue that went on behind the scenes in these committee meetings—and confirms our conviction that the hand of your God (and ours also) overruled these affairs and that nothing could frustrate His glorious Plan — THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STATE OP ISRAEL. Yours very sincerely,
THE POWELL RIVER BIBLIOAL INSTITUTE,
President.

ITALIAN JEWS ACQUITTED On Draft Evasion Charges—^ROME (WJA)—Two young Italian Jews who left their country clandestinely to fight in the Israeli arnSed forces were acquitted of charges of draft evasion. The prosecutor of the Rome Military Tribunal asked for the acquittal of Leo Di Capua, because he had left Italy "for ideological reasons'\ The court dropped the charges of draft evasion on the ground that Di Capua had left Italy with a regular exit permit issued by the Allies and that he had done so on ideological grounds.
The second Jew, Tiziano Uzzielle, also charged with draft evasion for having left Italy clandestinely to fight in Israel, was allowed by the Ministry of Defence to "to regularize his military status and to consider himself expatriated with the permission of the Italian Military Authorities,"

Camp Kvutza to Open in August
Preparations for the Habonim Summer Camp are going ahead full blast The three chaverim sent out to Gabriola Island to have a look at the camp brought back a very favorable report:
The swimming beach, which is about half a block from camp, is in a placid, sheltered cove and the beautiful clean sand of the beach slopes out gradually for a distance of about 250 feet. At low tide a large portion of the beach is laid bare and . it will be suitable for ball games, etc. In the summer months, there are thitee ferries running daily from Nanaimo and fresh milk is delivered every morning.
Water for the camp is obtained from a well above the campsite, which means that no sewage could .ever pollute the water supply. This well is now being drilled to twice its depth and being completely cemented over to assure a steady water supply during the summer months.
The camp property stretches back for several acres inland and provides space for hikes within the camp site. For the older campers, hikes of up to ten miles might be undertaken to the south half of the island.
The cabins are all fairly new and in excellent condition. There are six beds in each cabin and spring beds with good mattresses provide comfortable accommodations The main hall and dining room will accommodate 50 people easily. There is also an outdoor fireplace for burning garbage.
The Habonim C?amp Kvutza wil be run on a strictly kosher basis. Two camp mothers and a nurse wil' be in attendance.
The camp season will start shortly after August 6th and will run for a period of two weeks. After the regular campers' period^ a men-ahalim camp willbe heldfor ashiort period. This camp has been rented for Habonim but a limited number of non-members will be allowed. For further information regarding the Habonim Cariip Kvutza phone Mr. Harry Gordon at CH. 8955, or Miss Shirley Gure-vich at FA. SOllL.
