A life of art and architecture
Prof. Abraham Rogatnick leaves the classroom and leaps onto the stage.
ALEXKLINER SOCIAL COLUMNIST
Art and architecture in great measure define the life of Abraham Rogatnick. Graduating Harvard in architecture in 1953, he came to Vancouver 46 years ago. Six weeks later, he co-founded the New Design Gallery, this town's first contemporary art venue. He's also a co-founder of the Arts Club of Vancouver. Eventually, it became the first home of the Arts Club Theatre, today a local institution.
In 1959, Abraham joined the University of British Columbia's faculty, where he was a professor of architecture until his retirement in 1985. In 1972, he won UBC's Master Teacher Award.
The last four years, Abraham has taken to the stage. In keeping with his new theatrical persona, he's replaced his surname with his dramatic middle name, billing himself as Abraham Jedidiah. His many roles have given Abraham an opportunity to play a range of characters from Enghsh burglar to Italian uncle to an old Jew. Who knows, some day Abraham may even get to play a retired professor of architecture.

In honor of their 65th wedding anniversary, Edwina and Paxil Heller established an emergency relief fund for seniors in need. In their names, the Hellers set up a $100,000 endowment fund though the Jewish Family Service Agency. A generous gift, indeed, for a couple of "newly-weds." Imagine the gifts once the Hellers are married awhile.
A concert by the Orchid Ensemble titled Ten Thousand Miles to Kashgar will uniquely mix traditional Chinese with western and world percussion instruments. It takes place Saturday, Oct. 27,8 p.m., at the Capilano College Theatre and features a new work by Moshe Denberg commissioned by the ensemble through the Canada Council.
Kashgar, I should mention, is an ancient city of China. How far from Kashgar to Kasrilivke, the legendary shtetl in Sholcm Ale-ichcm's stories, Moshe didn't say.

tor. Ken Levitt says his wife, Leah, wants him to "keep active and busy." Don't be surprised. Ken, if "active and busy" includes a vacuum deaner and a dust mop.
Should mention, the community's invited to Ken's farewell reception given by the Louis Brier on the premises Sunday, Nov. 18,2-4 p.m.
After a third consecutive drought year, Israel's deputy infrastructure minister, Naomi Blumenthal, and her mini.gtcr, Avigdor Lieberman, have laimched a NIS10 million water conservation advertising campaign seeking a ban on watering parks and private gardens,
"Instead of talking about the grass being greener," declares Blumenthal, "we'd like to see it yellower."
Turning Israel's desert into a garden, these days, just ain't the color it used to be.

Rabbi Bob Alpcr is billed as "the world's only practising clergyman doing stand-up comedy ... internationally." He recently brought 90 minutes of hilarity to the Norman Rothstein Theatre as part of the Federation's Combined Jewish Appeal Family Day, which kiclced off the campaign this year. It all began with the rabbi's definition of the "quintessential" Jewish joke... "a joke a gentile doesn't understand and a Jew has already heard." From there, the laughter was nonstop.
Robert Zimmerman, better known as Bob Dylan, now
60, says "I stopped counting after 40." Having had heart problems in 1997, Dylan says he's "feeling fit," adding philosophically, "a day above groimd is a good day." Now there's a new dimension to the cliche ... "have a good day."
About Dylan's recently released album. Love and Theft, his 43rd, critics say it's got some of his best lyrics in decades.
Hillcl Kook, a Palestinian Jew, in 1940, led an unsuccessful campaign, along with American author and playwright Ben Hccht and others, for the United States to save European Jews. Kook, who served on Menachem Begin's Herut ticket in Israel's first Knesset, died in Tel-Aviv, age 86.
