Moimonides Code in First Translation
NEW HAVEN (WNS) — The first volume of an English translation of the Code of Maimonides -7-often called the "father of modern Judaism" was published recently by the Yale University Press. The book represents the first time that any part of the famous encyclopedic Code has ever been translated into any language from the original Hebrew.
Publication of the book inaugu-ra-tes a projected 15-volume translation of the entire medieval Code that is being prepared under the auspices of Judaica Research at Yale University. The volume published is "The Book of Civil Laws," which is Book Thirteen in the Maimonides Code. It has been translated by Jacob Rabinowitz, New York attorney noted for his legal and Hebrew scholarship.
Moses Maimonides, the celebrated sage who gave the Jews their code of religious, moral, and ciyil conduct, was bom in Cordova, Spain, in 1135 A.D., but spent most of his life in Cairo. He lias been likened to the Biblical Moses in an old Jewish epigram, which says that "from Moses unto Moses, there -was none like Moses."

Here we have a few brief glimpses of how the monies raised In United Jewish Appeal campaigns In Canada and United States are being spent. The JDC is speeding some 25,000 immigrants to Israel each month (upper left); therjg they must.be housed, clothed and fed (upper right), until they can be retrained (lower left) and placed in constructive jobs. A new and pressing need must also be met this - year in caring for • the 900,000 destitute Jews of North Africa and other moslem lands (lower right) and beginning to bring them to Isradi.
In many parts of Canada this year's UJ A drives have already been veiy successfully concluded. In :^yancouver the limited Jewish Appeal campaign for $350,000 is scheduled to begin September 11. The tasksi of upbuilding are immeasureably grreat but this vast program is now endangered by a shortage of funds. Its success or failure is dependent upon the contributions from every Jewish community, including Vancouver and B.C.
