Jews run for the cure
Members of the Greater Vancouver Jewish community turned out Sunday, Sept. 30, for the annual Run for the Cure, which raised more than $500,000 this year to support breast cancer research. Synagogues represented included Har-El, Beth Israel, Beth Tikvah, Temple Sholom and Or Shalom. The North Shore congregation of Har-El had almost 50 walkers and runners, ranging in age from eight to 86, led by Rabbi Shmuel Bimham. Next year's run may include an inter-synagogue challenge. □
Housing strategies
The expensive housing market in the Lower Mainland is a challenge to groups trying to provide affordable shelter. A free lecture co-sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver is bringing an urban planning expert to discuss the issue this month.
Dr. Victoria Basolo, assistant professor of urban and regional planning at the University of California, Irvine, will address the constraints that inhibit the provision of afibrdable housing and the need to match strategies with local contexts. A question-and-answer session, moderated by former premier Mike Har-court, will follow.
In addition to the Nonprofit Housing Society of the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver, the event is sponsored by the Tenants' Rights Action Coalition, the Lower Mainland Network for Afibrdable Housing, Smart Growth B.C., the B.C. Nonprofit Housing Association and the Carnegie Community Action Project.
The lecture takes place Oct. 18,7-8:30 p.m., at Simon Fraser University's Harbor Centre campus. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Call 604-291-5100 or e-mail city@sfti.ca. □
