The main reason for the succiess of this yeai-'s drive Is undoubtedly due to the increasing number of volunteers who have come forward as corhpoign workers. The current cam|3aign is already being, talked about as the best organized drive In Vancouver. And Its olL because there wqs Sufficient manpower and wornenpower available to organize the fullest possible coverage of the community.
Hats off to all UJA campaign workers who are making it possible for Vancouver

Are You A Canvasser?
Are you a canvasser who has /ffiEered to/" canvass and wants to do 'ja good job yet feels uneasy about .answering questions. Perhaps it is because you are not too sure of the answers yourself. The following are a few presupposed questions with answers. Study these for your own information so thkt you will be ready with your answers.
Question: Where does the money
Answer: It is divided between the Zionist Organization, Canadian Jewish Congress, the Jewish Community Council, the Talmud Tor-ah and the- PeJ•etz^^^^ by far the greatest ^iioiuii gctes to Israel.
Question: What ,is it used Vor In Israel? Aren't they self-supporting?
Answer: No, Israel is going through its pioneering stage in development just as all new coun-triies do. The inhabitants of Israel are compelled to do without, many commodities so ithat they may survive jand emerge victorious. In Israel there are rigid rations on food, clothing, household goods, in fact on almost every commodity.
Question: But I saw a movie short that showed Israel producing: &1I sorts of goods?
Answer: Yes, but those goods are for export so that Israel can obtain the' up-to-date machinery required to increase production. The Israeli people have had' to share their food with all the new\ iihmigrants.
Question: But I understood the D.P. Camps of Europe were practically all emptied.
AnSAijrer: Yj^s, but have you not heaitdFbf^ tfie^Je^s who are, being brought in from North Africa^ from Yemen, from Iraq and fripm Persia. And there are many more Jews in the middle-easft

E go ;to a-^eatigdeai, of trouble" said a member of the Cbmmimity Counct :BOai^d;/'to see/^ Ibeal oi^miiza-tions get endorsation for the smallest .money-raising affair, but we permit these men to come into Vahcouver at will and take thousands of dollars out of the community." Another board member pointed out that so long as there was no central fund to ^hich nonlocal institutions could apply for grants we had no justification for preventing them from sending col-ledtors (commonly known as meshulochim") into Vancouver. Some doubt was also expressed that these men could be effectively stopped from ^raising funds in the community whenever they chose to do so.
Complaints have been coming to the Council about the minor invasion of emissaries who approach business men in their p^ces and worshippers in the synagogue for contributions on behalf of all kihd^ of . non-local institutions. This one seeks suppbrt^ ivah iri New York; thalt bi^^ old men's home in Israiel,;a third "or a Hcfbrew d Montreal. ;o respond-tb^ fuhds^ ;Vancbiweir's \' great distance trohi Eastern centres liiyes us ho immunity> and the nturiber of "nieshulochim" seems to be on ;he increase..
As was pointed but at the Com--munity Co.uncil meeting, some of ;he institutions have a legitimate claim for support. They have been unctioning for many yeairs and perform a worthwhile service. Which ones have such a claim, and to what extent, the average
main who is approached has no_ idea. He has not the informatioi^ at harid, nor has he the time to make an investigatibh. Tlite contribution he gives may bear no ;.reIatio^ -to, the worthiness or the nbed of the institution. This means; that an institution which should, according to ife over-all budget, get two hundred dollars, from Vancouvier, may tap this community for two thousand dollars, while a larger and more impbrtant institution may draw a, great deal less. There is nothing rational or equitable about the way in which support for these agencies is obtained fronj the Vancouver Jewish Community.
"the Council of. Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds in the United States has for soxhe years been gatherinig infprm4ti6h on the institutions which^ seek support throughout the country. They have obtained financial statements, budigets, and program descriptions,: from hundreds of such agencies and have ^mside the "information available to us.. The probabilities are, therefore, that telephone- call to the Centre office will produce sonae fctcts about) an institution which may be'currently sbhciting funds from business men in this communitS^ and will enable a man to .decide whether he should give and if so, how much.
Lack of infotniation is not the only. objection to this form of • solicitation^ It is obvious to any-^ one that a large part of themoney collected by a "ineshiaoch" goes 'or expenses and that the amount of money received by the institution bears little ^resemblance to the amount, of money collected. All institution might fare just as well if it were mailed a cheque of bne hundred dollars from the Conmnmity as it does by sending m a«man who collects two or three times as much. , .
