ISRAEL'S fifth anniversary falls on April 20 this year, cdrrespphding tb lyar 5 on the Jewish calendar. In this community wis are celebrating the anniversary on Sunday evening at a public meeting in the Schara Tzedeck Auditorium.
It is difficult to make an assessment on a fifth anniversary. When a child is five years old it may already show pre-codous tendencies, and certainly these are apparent in the young Jewish stdte. But in what direction the child will ultimately develop its talents is hard to foretell. All we know is that It needs our continued help, guidance and support. .
It might be. well to look back upon the varied pattern of support required from us by the Jewish state over the last five years. In 1948 we were providing money for defense and men tb help in that defense. In 1949 and 1950 we were called upon to provide financial aid for "the Great Homecoming." In 1951 and 1952 the emphasis shifted towards the tasks of upbuilding, productivization and econorriic development.
For many years we have been asked to give iVioney for the UJA, for the JNF, for HIstadrut, for Youth"Aliyah. This year we are still being asked to give. But as we celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Jewish state we are also being asked c/earl/'dnd forthrightly, to invest in the future bflisrael:'by buying bonds.
The State of Israel Bond drive is to be launched in Vancouver in the next couple of weeks. The importance of the bonds and thfeir relationship to other efforts for Israel and to the development of the Jewish state will be given considerable elaboration in theBullef in in the immediate future.
As we observe Israel's anniversary however we should realize that our purchases of Israel Bonds will be fruitful and tangible evidence of the link between Jews here and Jews in Israel.
Be a Blood Donor Tuesd^^
NEXT Tuesday night is once again Blood Donor night in the Jewish Community. On that evening B'nai B'rith and tlie Community Council are sponsoring a Red Cross Clinic at the Talmud Torah from 7 p.m. to 9 ip-m.
With its mobile cjinie staff and equipment the Red Cross can accommodate 60 persons per hour. In order to take full advantage of these facilities for the two-hour period 180 volunteer donors will be required.
Some 1,000 pints of blood per week are used in British Columbia ^one and reserves soon become depleted without a constant supply of volunteer blood donors. Since each donor contributes only one pint of blood it cafi be seen that it takes a great many donors to meet the weekly quota of the. Red Cross.
Compared to the great heed the goal of 180 donors for next Tuesday is a very modest one and should certainly be fulfilled. Men and women in good health between the ages of 18 and 65 are eligible as blood donors. A doctor and nurse will be on hand to dieck each prospective donor.
COUNCIL OF JEWISH WOMEN NOW AUTONOMOUS IN CANADA|Fo;;;m m;;.
Schara'Tzedeck Men's Club Dinner
TORONTO
The decision of
National Council of Jewish Women of Canada to become autonomous of its U.S. counterpart, was implemented at the recent NCJW convention in Cleveland, it was reported here last week by Mrs. B. Robinson, national president,' and Mrs. H. liorie, immediate past president of NCJW in Canada. The Canadian Council has decided to "seiek cooperation rather than affiliation" with the Council in United States.
liirs. Robinson and Mrs. Lorie attended the Cleveland convention in behalf of the organisation In Cianada. They reported back that the National Council of Jewish Womehv.in,the United States is troubled by present tendencies in that country to brand any kind of reform a^ "communist."
They feel the need to fight for freedbjHl of ideias which is presently being threatened by the general spread of suspicion and by the' constant congressional investigations.
"The deep concern felt by the American Council over present
trends on the/ international and American scene was reflected by guest speakers and resolutions,' Mrs. Robinson noted.
The task of stimulating and educating the individual and community to their responsibility in a free society' was seen as rnpre iihportant than ever. The couhciL with its motto of "faith and humanity" is trying to do everything it can to further human welfare both in the Jewish and general communities, localr-ly, nationally and internationally, by its integrated program of education, service and social action.".
It was also decided to broaden

JDC SENT PASSOVER
270,000 POUNDS FOOD OVERSEAS
PARIS—Nearly 270,000 pounds of matzoth and other Passover supplies were purchased by Joint Distribution Committee European headquarters for distribution to needy Jews in Europe, North Africa and the Near East, this year, it was anounced here recently by Moses W. Beckelman, JDC Director-General for overseas operations.
The supplies include 201,600 pounds of matzoth arid 67,200 pounds of matzoth meal. Additional supplies purchased in the United States and shipped to Europe for distribution include 1,000 pounds of shmurah flour, and more than 8,000 bottles of wine.
Funds collected for Overseas Moes Chippin in Vancouver also go towards JDC supplies through Canadian Jewish Congress.
Despiite the cessation of JDC activities in Hungary in January, the Jews of that country will still be able to celebrate Passover with JDC's supplies. Shipped to Hungary early this year were 100,000 pounds of matzoth and 40,000 pounds of matzoh meal, the largest amount for any single Jewish community in Europe.
Other countries into which major shipments of Passover foods have been sent include Yugoslavia, Greece, Austria, Spain, Portugal and Italy.
GRANDFATHER* DISAGREES WITH 'GRANDMOTHER'
To the Editor:
Answering "Grandmother" — when did the UJPO worship) God?
£lecause the Jevidsh cqriimuhi^^ are fine and ioleraiit peojplie, wliy should we impose democracy Oh a (CJfess Of people ^hd worship <ilc-tat6i*ship? ' 'A says every day in his i>rayer "May it be Thy will, 6 librd my God and Gfbd of my Fathers, to deliver me this day and every day from arrogant men and arrogance, and from a bad man and from a' bad companion, and from a bad neighbor and from any mishaps and from the adversary that destroyeth. From a hard judgment, whether be son of the covenant or not.be a son of the covenant." How can we change the Law above mentioned?
A class of people which tried to destroy Israel, to accuse Chaim Weizmann, Ben Giu-ion and all our great leaders, calling them spys, and particularly our Canada where we enjoy so much frecr-dom and liberty. Condemning everything that is holy to our Democracy. I still state the UJPO are not worthy to be in pur community. I still say they are Communists and I cannot say all I know about them.
A. GRANDFATHER.
CAUSE OF DISUNITY?
To the Editor:
The recent happenings in pur community have appalled and sickened the majority of our thinking members. Certain so-called leaders of oiu: Jewish community have appointed themselves as a high tribunal, and accused other groups of being traitors to the community as well as to Israel.. Because some Eastern individual made a speech, the group who pj^ga^ized the evenijpg were held responsible for his ut-erances and opinions, and thus
were excommunicated as ranking members of the Vancouver Jewish Community Council.
In* this day and ag:e should we stand by ahd AVitneiss the direct interference and intimidation of an individual's inherent riglit of thought, political br otherwise? Whatever disunity exists lieffe today, appears to rest direct!;^ on our community leaders.
We have a perfect example in Vancouver today, where' , the Chinese community is split' in half as pressures, threats of violence'and oth^^r extreme n^etlrods Ei^iB being used to cb^be mi^i&tiS^ris of opposing ideologies. Jhe result can only bfe measured in broken friendships, divided families, and a disrupted community.
We know that in Israel today the individual is considered the greatest asset in the country. Th§ maimed and ailing are not only welcomed but cared fbr^ eVen thbugh many will never be able to contribute to the inaterial welfare of the country. In brief, no Jew in Israel is considered "expendable" whether rich br poor, maimed or well. Socialist, Democrat or Commimist. To me, Israel is one of the few truly Democratic states in the world today, respecting a person's faith and political opinions. We know that the co-operatives or kibbutzim which are really socialistic, or even communistic enterprises, have contributed as much to the general welfare and the progress of Israel as the individuals who believe in private., enterprise and invest in Israel.
It,would be refreshing indeed, in these angry times, to follow a discussion which, for all the ex-plosiveness of its subject matter, coiild be carried on in a spirit of open-minded inquiry, a discussion completely devoid of rancor, dogma, and blinded hatred. Surely reason is a better guide than fear. " . S. H. GOULD.
