McDonald tells how bonds
help BtHLDim^

Israel's present ds^y needs and problems were 'described here, in warm human terms by the Hon. James G. McDonaid, who was the first accredited ambassador of any power to the Jewish state.
Speaking in behalf pf the State of Israel Bond Dfi^ve, Mr^ McDonald painted a vivid picture of how bond dollars would help Israel in its "desperate struggle for ec-^ onomic survival," arising in large measure out of its unprecedented '■'open-door" immigration policy.
Choosing a Canadian example for comparison, the U.S. diplomat pointed out that Vancouver Island which is slightly larger in area than the State of Israel, has a
now living in the Jewish - state^; Israel looks forward to an eventual population of about four million^ he added.
The rate at which the Jewish state has^^bsorbed newcomers.is the same sis if Canada were to take in 18,000,000 immigrants in two years.
"Bond doUars are not being Used for consumer goods or for what we consider luxuries," Mr. McDonald declared, "They,do not go directly into making life eas-er for the people of llsrael. The bond dollars are used raliier to mUd up the subrstructure of Israel's economy."
Mr. McDonald, told how bond dollars are being used in Israel to build roads, pf which the Beer-sheba to S'dom highwsiy is & most outstanding recent development. He told hoiy poor port facilities are being overcome . . . "One winter the wi£ds Were so s^ong that, no ship - could enter

ripHE choice of Lil Shapiro and'Joe Satandv tP receive the X i^cbnd Wingate;C^ awards for service to Zioxiism in Vancouver proves to be a very happy selection. The presentation was made at the d^ last. Wednesday by Dr. S. Margolese, president pf the Zipnist Organization of B.C.
Both Mrs. Shapiro and Mr. Satanov have beenw^ de-viitiedly for the cause-of Z^ a great many years. Mrs.
Shapiro iii particular has deservedly earned the title of "Mrs. Youth Aliyah." -
The appropriateness of the award to these two people is emphasized by the fact that both are still very active in Zionist and Jewish commtmity affairs. Mrs. Shapirp, who ha:s held every Dost di^ impprtance in Hadassah here from chapter president to regional chairman, is once again leading; a new V^haptc^r. She also continues to be an active leader in the local: Hadassah CPiihcll. Mr. Satanov participates regularly in the affair^ of the Zionist Organization, the Ipbal Jewish Appeal and other" Zionist projects. He is also currently serving as president 6f the Beth Israel Syhagogue. '
We know that the selection of a man and a woman to receive these awards is a sound precedent for the future. The efforts of the Jewish women of Vancouver in behall of Zionism and other positive phases of Jewish life; certainly deserve equal recognition witht,the/work of the me^^^

Ambassador McDonald also told, hpw Bond dollars will help to save water in Israel and expand, the irrigation system.
Discussing Israel's resoimces in minerals, oil, etcVj the speaker emphasized that these were very much in the potential stage and could only be turned into, reality llBfoSl^ l^ge*s6aie^'-imi'(^^ made possible by State of Israel 3onds.

NEW-YORK, (WJA) — The Ainerican Jewish Congi^ess and
the National Association for -the Advancement of Coloured People have issued a joint report attacking the United States Congress for its record of '"'not mere indifference, but active opposition to racial and religious equality." In 1952 U.S. Congress, the report states, failed to enact "fair employment and other civil rights legislation and, in revising ' the immigration laws, it ended one inquiry and introduced new injustices."
The report also charges the Executive branch of the Government with failure to make progress in reducing inequalities. Apart from continuing the drive to reduce segregation in the armed forces, the Federal Government "showed little initiative" i ntwo areas where its powers to remove discrimination are unquestioned •— emplosrment under Government contract and Federal housing.
The American Jewish Congress has joined six national Jewish organisations in the and 28 Jewish community councils in ,a brief submitted to the U.S. Supreme ipourt urging it to rule that State^«purts may not award damages aiG^inst property owners for violating restrictive xoyenants baipring the sale of property to Negroes. Separate submissions on jdmilar lines were made by the Americah Jewish Committee and the B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation League.
