Jacob's sons tell time
John Buchner's clock serves as a reminder of Israel.
KYLE BERGER REPORTER
He considers himself to be "amateur, amateur, amateur," but John Buchner's cold-cast, copper Judaica clock is nothing short of top, professional quality.
Buchncr, a retired miner who has taken a liking to the process of cold-cast bronzing, has produced a unique clock that has a representation of one ofJacob'sl2sons at each hour of the day on the clock's face.
The self-taught artist has always considered his interest in art to be "just a hobby" but he has decided to promote this particular piece because of its connection with Zionism.
"The clock is functional and it can be a daily reminder," he said. "I would hope that every time someone looks at it, they will be reminded of Israel and think positively."
The clock also features the Hebrew word shalom, which means hello, goodbye and peace. The perimeter of the clock has olive leaves which also symbolize peace. The centre of the time piece

has the image of the star of David and a menorah signifying Israel's destiny to become a light unto the nations.
The process of cold-cast bronzing begins with the drawing of a design, which Buchner said ho changes several times before he is ready for the next phase.
Once the design is complete, he makes a plaster mold into which the copper, brass, bronze, nickel, silver or iron is poured to shape the finished product. Buchncr has been working with cold-casting since 1980, a few years after he moved to Vancouver from South Africa. He is hoping he can find someone who will take his clock design, market and mass produce it so that he can begin working on new designs and projects.
The clodc, which took Buclincr approximately five weeks to complete, is being sold for $150 in various difiercnt types of metal.
For more information or to view Buchner's work, call him at his home in Abbotsford, 1-604-504-3216. □
