WE HEAR that the failure of the Red^ Feather Campaign to reach its objective for the Vancouver Community Chest will mean some budget cutting for the Jewish Community Centre and the Family Welfare Bureau. About 50 percent of the Centre budget and about 90 percent of the Family Welfare budget comes from the chest. . . . Incidently when the call for Red Feather volunteers i^as made at a B'nai B'rith meeting many hands went up. . . . But many of the hands were not followed into action by thej people behind them. . . . If it weren't for Harry Snider's personal effort the 89 per cent of quota achieved by the Jewish section would not have been reached. . . . Anyone who has not yet contributed to the Red Feather should really do so now
without delay.

TO STIMULATE interest among members of his publid" speaking and discussion group
last week Harold Rome picked as a topic the "novel" question: "Should the UJPO be in the Cdm-munity Council?" It had the desired effect, we're told and produced a very lively discussion. * . * *
IT IS BELIEVED that people like to get publicity but here's a situation that belies this theory.
. . The Jewish Community Council wants to establish a framed record of photographs of all its presidents, past and present. A call has been issued for such photos but there hasn't been much response to date. . . . Anyone having photos available of men like Nonnan Brown> Paul Heller, Harold Kahn and Dr. J. V. White, are asked to contact the Centre.
* * * . . WE HEAR that Bulletin Editor Abe Arnold is slated to be guest speaker at the next meeting of the Wingate Club on November 16? . . . And where?

Mrs. Gotlieb President of
MONTREAL — Mrs. D. P. Gotlieb of Winnipeg, Manitoba, was re-elected for a second term . as President of the Hadassah Organization of Canada at the 15th Biennial Convention which concluded in the Mount Royal Hotel in Montreal, Monday afternoon.
A resolution of historic significance was adopted whereby Mrs. Anna Raginsky and Mrs. Rose Singer, both Past-Presidents of'the organization were elected Honorary Presidents for life.
In a keynote address delivered by Dr.. Bernard Cherrick, Director-General of the Board of Governors of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, he showed how Israel is developing an economic structure based upon prophetic teaching which should serve as a good example for the entire world.
"Israel is moulding an economy mid-way between free enterprise and a socialistic State," continued Dr. Cherrick, "but is avoiding the pitfalls of both extremist systems. The socialism of Israel can be traced to the teachings of Amos and Isaiah, arid definitely not. to marxism."
Rabbi Jesse Schwartz, National Executive Director of the Zionist Organization of Canada, paid tribute to the Hadassah members and pVaised them' for having played an equal part in the creation of the Jewish honieland. "The Zionist Movement," said Rabbi Schwartz, "hag always recognized equality of women and their rights and their duties were always respected." Partisanship m Zionism outside of the State of

"Youth Aliyah," said Mrs. Lorna Wingate of London, England at the Sunday night banquet, "has drawn tens of thousands of Jewish and non-Jewish women throughout the world in the closest ties of brotherhood in an effort to save the lives of 62,000 children in the past 20 years."
Mrs. Wingate, widow of Major General Charles Orde Wingate, represented . the World Youth Aliyah. The youth of Israel, according tp the speaker,, represents the right hand of the new State, and is a symbol of faith of

the Jewish people m their struggle for survival. With 3,000 to 4,000 boys and girls coming into the coimtry every year Mrs. Wingate showed how they take thfeir rightful place in the development and expansion of the land.
A novel feature of the convention week-end was a number" of Workshops which analyzed the various activities and j)rojects"of Canadian Hadassah. Groups of members attended sessions on Youth Aliyah, World Jewish Child's Day, Hadassim, Nahalal, Supplies for Israel, Hebrew University, and Bonds for Israel.
The Treasurer's report was submitted by Mrs. A. D. Paltielj and discussion was led by Mrs. H: Wisenthal, National* i^ihancial Secretary.
In reviewing the activities of he past 2% years of Canadian Hadassah at the opening session held Saturday night, Mrs. D. P. Gptlieb (Winnipeg), National President reported that 282 chapters in 80 Canadian communities had a membership of over 13,000 women with 4,000 additional contributors.
Canadian Hadassah, according to Mrs. Gotlieb, is spreading its influence of Jewish life in all the communities in Canada and is also fulfilling its mission in Israel. During the past 30 months the organization raised almost $2,500,000.00 for "its various projects in the Holy Land. Hundreds of children from 24 different countries are now attending the Children's Village "Hadassim." A new hospital, made possible by the generosity of Mrs. Maurice, Pollack of Quebec City, looks after all the medical needs of the youngsters.
Nahalal, which was founded exactly 30 years ago this week, was the first Canadian Hadassah project in Israel. It has graduated 2,000 young people who are filling important positions in the agricultural life in the country. A secondary school for higher education and a gymnasixmi have recently been completed.
As an integral part of WIZO (Women's International, Zionist Organization) Canadian Hadassah has sponsored Youth Aliyah for the past 20 years. 62,000 children from 72 countries have been rescued and rehabilitated with the aid of $4,000,000 which Canadian v/omen have contributed to this project. A school for mentally retarded children has been dedicated to Canadian Hadassah.

Among the new projects which Canadian Hadassah will sponsor is an intensive educational program of general Jewish aims, and participation in Canadian affairs. The organization will also make an effort to strengthen its membership and to increase its junior division.

MENDEL LADSKY, Canadian director of the American Fund for Israeli Institutions, was a visitor in Vancouver this weekend. Mr. Ladsky stated that he is planning to bring a group of lisraeli artists to give a concert in Vancouver next spring. These^ artists have given some very successful concerts in other western centres during the past few weeks. Howi-ever due to the heavy schedule of fall activities in the local Jewish community it was not possible to arrange a qpncert here at this time.
The fund represented by Mr. Ladsky works in behalf of some 50 cultural institutions in Israel, among them the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
Other beneficiaries of Canadian Hadassah's generosity are World Jewish Child's Day * which provided a deeper understanding between Jewish ' children of the world and Israel, the Biology-Science Building at the Hebrew University dedicated to the memory of Dr. ChEiim Weizman, the

The members of the Security Council received Mr. Eban's statement with satisfactiph. Dr. Charles Malik, the representative of Lebanon, said that "we should first of all be grateful to the representative of Israel, Mr. Eban. We should congratulate him on the initiative he has taken and we hope that we shall all act in the future in the same . spirit of conciliation."
In commenting on a suggestion by the Greek representative designed to accelerate the consideration of the question by the Security Council, Ambassador Eban stated that Israel's outlook "on the substance, of this question is that the work under discussion is legitimate, is constructive, is of enormous econom.ic significance, and is utterly without harm or prejudice to any single private or public right. MoreoVjjar, we hay0j observed that. the letter of the United Nations Chief of Staff, dated October 20, brings his view much closer to our own by narrowing the issue down to points on Which we shall be able to' give complete ,satis-faction and binding undertakings. In these circiunstances, my Government does have a direct and urgent national interest in the speedy discussion of this subject, and we are ready, at any time that the Council wishes to meet, to give a full outline of our viewpoint on the substance of the matter."
