The Story of ^
We Gdebrate^^ ft
By RABBI BERNARD GOLDENBERG
IN 175 BCE (before Common Era) Antiochus became Emperor ol^the Greco-Syrian Empire of which Palestine was then a province. The Emperor used his newly acquired power to intensify the enslavement and persecution of one of his tributary nations, namely the Jews. He added a new approach, the forcible intrdduction of another culture, Greco-Hellenisin, in addition to the use of violence to force the'Jews to abandon their sacred religious practices.
Antiochus wanted' the Jews to forget the one G-d and to worship instead. Greek idols. Some Jews yielded through fear or conviction. The latter were a distinctive sect in Jewish life known as the Hellenists-Greek assimilationists. ; Many, however.

OBSERVANCE
Chanuka begins on the 25th ^ay of Kislev (thi^ year Tuesday, December 1 after Sunset) and continues for eight days. It is celebrated at home (primarily) and also at the synagogue.
At home we light the Chanuka menorah, play dreidel, send greeting cards, have parties for young and old, provide everyone especially children with presents, eat latkes'and in general create a mood for joy and merriment'.
At the ^nagogue we express pur feelings of gratitude by the chanting of special psalms (Hal lei) and a special prayer o:
