And yet for the Jews it is different. For the People of the Book are breaking new ground, setting new patterns, establishing newr precedent)^, it is as if the face o| Israel had suddenly lost the deep lines of its antiquity, of its age-old heritage, and assumed the visage of the young in heart, with ideals ever b^pfore them and the vision of a Promised Land, with the promise fulfilled, ever urging theni forward; never should discouragement and failure li^ tleterminatipn to achieve their inspired ideal.
How to keep these visions and spur on our people to the tremendous effort to meet the challenge of these tryiiig times are problems which have liately ofc-cupied cpnsiderable editorial at-^ ^ntion in the world Jewish press. Essentially tlie writers have been concerned with the implications o4 the challenge to.the leaders of Jewish communities within Is-l^el and throughout the Diaspora.- ■ ■■-'■-■■■■■■■j^ ■ <r^^^-
In substance the queistion migh be: posed: '*Ma Nishtana^ Ha'am Hazeh Mi Kal Ha'aiiiim?*' (How different is this nation from all the other nations?) ...
It seems obvious enough that if the State of Israel is to mean Anything to Jews throughout the world, it must be more than just a political symbol, mote than just a refuge frpm the barrage of disparagement that has beset the jews for two thousand years.
Just a' moment's thought would scon reveal that Jewish life is in itself a challenge. The imere fact that history has designated the ipeople of Israel as thie People of the Book is in itself a tacit acknowledgement of 'the fac|; that the children of Israel had a message and a duty. Ilieir. in^ Behold we show you a liew way of life. Their duty: to%rdad that message throughout the worldl

Ais David B6h Guriori puts it in a recent article in the Jewish newspaper, **The Day'*:
"The rise of the State of Israel and the dramatic* opening of the gates of the Land of Israel to every Jew who desires ^ settle on his ancestral soil has not brought forth the required' Zionist response from American Zionists. And ail this can be lone by the carrying out of two ?reat historic taisks now confronting World Jewry: the strengthening of a system of Jewish education and the inauguration of a Chalutz movement for the npbuUding of the State of Israel."

ever, remains that the idea of immigration from America was always neglected. Dr. Neumann continued. The only goal of the world Zionist leadership was tP obtain more and more funds from American Jews. We de^ manded their aid, but not their souls. When Ben Gurion was in the United States and addressed a gathering of 20,000 Jews in Madison Square Gardens in behalf of the Bond Campaign, he did not mention a single wore al)out _ either Zionism or immigration. When. I called this to his attention, Dr, Neumann said, Ben Gurion replied that he camefto talk to all Jews and not to Zionists. We, however, feel—stated Neumann—that the Zionist movement is the vanquard of the entire Jewish people.
American Zionists who were responsible for the establishment of the Jewish State have been continuously pushed aside — Dr. Neumann added, and various responsibilities were turned over to a number of new non-Zionist agencies. Even the leadership of the Bond Campaign was tufned over to others, although the work has been done . primarily by Zionists. -
Dr. Neumann closed with an appeal to stop indulging in meaningless definitions and to halt recriminations, because these hings will hot attract American Jews. Neiimann concluded with he words: "We should draw American Jews closer. Let us talk o them as brother to brother and let us teach them to understand our problems. I hope and ani sure that the day will come when they will come to Israel and we will witness a complete national redemption."
