SYMPHONY REVIEW
A rare and rich musical experience was, provided a most appreciative audience by the superlative Solomon, in concert with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra last Sunday. Playing the Brahms' First Piano Concerto, this sensitive artist displayed so complete a mastery of his instrument, so profound a comprehension of the thematic, material, so direct, yet so beautifully re strained and simple a manner that one wonders when again such a treat v/ill be duplicated No flamboyance, no bag of tricks here—just honesty and earnes dedication to a probing of the intrinsic values of the music itself. The contrasting moods o; the solemn, deeply Introspective second movement and the more brilliant and vigorous third, revealed the artist*s acute flexibility and fine powers of shading The orchestra's performance in ^his work was not especially noteworthy. Mr. Hoffman had to contend with the clumsy phrasing of this, Brahms' first major orchestra composition and at times it seemed just too formidable a hurdle' to overcome " succeksftilly. Bold inaccuracies in the brass were particularly prominent.
Of considerable interest to a Canadian audience was the performance of Toronto composer Harry Freedman's "Nocturne for Orchestra." This is a brief, intense work in the modern idiom, organically cohesive, symphoni-cally well developed, predominantly somber in mood. The orchestra played it with convincing ''competence.
Also included in the orchestral program were the "Overture to Der Freischutz" by Von Weber, whose dramatic character- was entirely fulfilled, the "Pastorale D'Ete" by Honegger, descriptive music, full of natural imagery, well depicted by the Orchestra and Tschaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet" Overture Fantasy.
The next concert on February 20 will feature Nathan- Milstein in the Brahms' Violin Concerto.
—DR. HARRY WINROB.
