Festival of Jewish Scbara Tzedeck- on
Humor at Feb. 20
Schara Tzedeck Men's Club<S>-
has announced this week an ambitious program for the balance of the current year. Leading off the list of events is an original idea called "The Festival of Jewish Humor" which will feature samplings of the best in Jewish humor as well as appropriate comment as to what makes it Jewish and humorous.
The Festival of Jewish humor, to be held Sunday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. will feature a panel of experts on Jewish humor who are well-known as story tellers. Among them will be the following: Abe Averbach, Dr. Ben Shu-man, and Dr. Sid Zbarsky. Wm. Wolfman, treasurer of the Schara Tzedeck Men's Club will serve as moderator. There will also be audience participation in the telling of stories and prizes will be given to those members of the audience whose contributions top those of the panelists. With the co-operation of the Ladies Auxiliary of Schara Tzedeck, refreshments will be available.
Additional events scheduled by the Schara Tzedeck Men's Club are: Passover Institute, March 27; Parim Carnival, March 6 (co-sponsored with the Ladies Aux-5 iliary); Oi Vey Dinner Dance
based on an Income Tax' theme to be held on April 30; Festiva! (>f Jewish Drama, May 29 and the Annual Father of the Year Award, June 21.
Vernon Bar Mif-zvah At Scharo Tzedeck
Friday Evening Services at Schara Tzedeck J;his Friday evening, Feb. 11 win be graced by the special occasion of the Bar Mitzvah of Edward Vernon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Vernon. In honor of the occasion the Bar Mitzvah guest of honor will charit the Kiddush and review the Sed-rah of the week.
Host and Hostess at the One^g Shabbat which follows the Schara Tzedeck Services will be Mr. and Mrs. Vernon.
The Services which will begin at 8:30 p.m. promptly, will be chanted by Cantor David Reznik assisted by the Young Boys Choir. Rabbi Goldenberg will officiate at the Services and preach the Sermon.
Kiddush on Friday Eve, Feb. 18, will be chanted by Harold Shacter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Shacter, who will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on Sabbath morning, Feb. 19.
LABOR ZIONISTS GUESTS AT BETH ISRAEL SERVICE
The Labor Zionist groups of Vancouver will be guests of the Beth Israel Synagogue at Friday evening services this' week. The guest speaker at the Oneg Shabbat following the services will be Ben Zion Ilan, an ^ Americsin Chalutz, who has spent more than 20 years in Israel. As a founder of Afikim and a top official in the Israel Ministry of Defence, Mr. Jlan will have a unique message about the building and defending of Israel.
The sermon topic which .Rabbi' David C. Kogen has chosen for the evening is "Ideals arid Their Application."
The liturgical service will be chanted by Cantor Abraham Deutsch assisted by the Beth Israel Choir under the direction of Sol Pelman.
The Beth Israel Choir has been invited to broadcast a program of Jewish music over the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Thursday evening, March 3, at 10:30 p.m. This broadcast will be in honor of Jewish Music Month and will be part of the series entitled "Parade of Choirs." DOANE BAR MITZVAH
Brian Doane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morton Doane, will be Bar Mitzvah at the Beth Israel Services this Saturday. Brian will chant the Kiddush - and Adon Olom on Friday night and will perform the duties assigned to a Bar Mitzvah at the Saturday morning services.
Next week, Harold Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gil Taylor, will be Bar Mitzvah.
Youth Aliyah Luncheon for Wed., Mar. 2

welfare bureau starts fund f6r prisoners
It was announced this week by Mrs. J. Allman, Social Worker at the Jewish Family Welfare Bureau, that arrangements have been completed to have Mr. Harvey Sinder collect contributions on behalf of the Bureau to bring comforts to the Jewish men at the
B. C. Penitentiary. These arrangements were made by Rabbi David
C. Kogen, the Bureau's representative and Chaplain to. the Jewish prisoners at the B.C. penitentiary.
Contributions may be sent to Mr. Sinder at 656 Robson ^tjeet. Receipts will later be mailed to the contributors from the Jewish FamiXy Welfare Buireau. The contributions will be used for the .purchase of foods, to be brought to the Jewish men at the Penitentiary on Passover and Rosh Hashona. Any additional contributions will be used for the purchase of reading matter of Jewish content to be placed in the Library of the Penitentiary.
Mr.; Sinder has been interested for a long time in the welfare of the Jewish prisoners. He has been privileged to visit the Penitentiary on those occasions when he has brought programs of enter-ainment for the men in "that In--stitution. He has ailsoxbeen active in the Sofitoall League here in Vancouver and has been a member of the Lion's Gate Lodge of B'nai B'rith.
