Jews in Vancouver now6,700; Estimatecl B.C ^ital 7^200
The city of Vancouver has the fastest * growing Jewish community in Canada, according to figures released recently by the research deparfapeii^jtpi CjpnajSte Jfiwish Congress on the Jewish populations of Winnipeg and Vancouver.
As of 1955, the Jewish population of Vancouver is esti](nsited at 6,700, and represents a 22.5 percent increase over 1951 census figture of 5,407. (The census re-
ports also show that tbe Jewish population for all of British Columbia in 1951 was 5,969. The Jewish population for the whole prpyinoe. in 1955 mf^^ th^ estimated al about 7,266!)
The 3^ewish population of Winnipeg for 1955 is estimated - at 19,550 (a 5.5 percent increase since 1951, when the figures stood at 18,514). The Congress research department assumes that 765

Jewish residents left Winnipeg for other Canadian cities from 1941 to 1951, and .another 396 left Winnipeg from 1951 to 1955. However these departures were offset by the arrival in Wiimi-peg of an estimated total of 1741 Jewish immigrants from 1951 to 1955, as well as by natural increase. The total Jewish population increase during that period is estimated at 1,040, including 772 by n^tiural iuc^^^ and 268, net immigration. ^
In Vancouver the Jewish pojpu-lation almost doubled in the 1941r 51 decade. The estimate since the last census shows that the rate of increase is now^ about half of what it was in the pre^ous decade.
However the Vancouver Jewish community still shows the largest- percentage increase during the period 1951-55. (The percentage increase of Jews in Montreal was more than three times that of Winnipeg, an4 the percentage of increase in Toronto niore than twice as much as Winnipeg, due to the large-scale settlement of Jewish immigrants in those cities during 1946-55.)
The Congress research depart-n^ent assumes that the continued high rate of increase in Vancouver is due to the very considerable migration of Jews from Winnipeg and other western cities as well as from smaller Jewish communities on the. prairies.
When there is little or no Jewish immigration the natural increase of Jewish population is estimated by one percent per year according to this Congress report. This is based on the annual excess of births over deaths.
