By RABBI JACOB FBEEDMAN
No Jew has to be told what '*Torah'' is.. By the same token no Jew who deserves the name Jew has to be told'what *'Tal-mud Torah'' means.
The "Study of the Torah" is an injunction which our Forefathers from time immemorial have gladly taken upon themselves as a loving and sacred duty. Just as they accepted the "Ol Malchiis Shomayim," —the "yoke of the heavenly kingdom", so they also took upon themselves the "OL HA-TORAH/" the ''yoke of the Torah" and the "yoke" of studying the Torah. To the Jews of past generations
the study of Holy Writ and the
commentaries and all the writings

obligation of love,—^a "burden"

It was only considerably later in our evpliition as a religion and as a culture that a parent vyas permitted to "get" someone else to teach his children, And it was at even ia later stage that the Rabbis of old permitted parents to 'engage" or '^empH^?' another learned person to teach his chil.^ dren for compensation. So seriously did they consider the sacred injunction laid upon them personally to teach their own children.
With the advent of private and professional or sesmi-professional ;eachers the community-at-large soon became aware of the fact that some parents could not af-ord to pay the "s'char limud." hose v/ho could afford to pay took this payment upon themselves as a sacred obligation.

Soon academies or yeshivos were established where all who so desyred and all those who loved t le Torah could study at no cost p themselves. It then became he obligation of the particular

We Jews have contributed to these academies and seminaries even when we did not wholly agree with the nature of the coursfes offered or the method and techniques of instruction. Speaking in blunt terms Mr. Freeman stated: "If the response of the Jews of the world is gooc and Israel is enabled to speec up her economic drive and ge arms at the same time then there will l^e no war. But if the Jews do not re^ond the way they should Israel will be faced with a war."
