DEVOTED WOMEN CONTINUE TO LEAD YOUTH ALIYAH DRIVE
revamps basis of UJA
WINNIPEG--The United Jewish Appeal has been reconstituted here for 1956 with the local agencies losing their priority status, according to a joint statement issued by the Winnipeg Jewish Welfare Fund, Mid-West Region of the Zionist Organization and Western Division of Congress.
"Because of deep concern for the tremendous overseas needs the ^statement emphasised, "the basis of the UJA agreement as it existed for the past six years is being completely revamped."
In 1956, under the proposed new arrangement, if the minimum requirements of the three participating organizations are not raised, any shortage of funds will be pro-rated among the three. .
"This will necessarily mean that the priorities previously established for local agencies will be. eliminated," the statement said.
■ In the past, local priorities meant that the first charge on campaign funds y/ent to meet the local agencies' budgets.
CHIELS ON TRIP OVERSEAS
WINNIPEG—Rabbi and Mrs. Arthur Chiel have left on a trip to Paris, North Africa and Israel
MRS. S. zack
"To me Youth Aliyah is a practical and concrete way of expressing my personal gratitude in- being alole to help others — thankfulness that in this field I may give— and not of necessity have to receive. Youth Aliy»h is like the blood of the heart—it carries life as it flows—and it returns to. renew the strength, hope and fulfillment of thousands of boys and girls", declared Mrs; Sydney Zack, associate chairman for the Youth Aliyah Drive.
One can truly say that Mrs. Sydney Zack was "bom to Ha-dasah work" since her efforts date back to the time when she was ten years old. Mrs. Zack, or Gertie (as she is affectionately called Toy young and old) has worked with tremendous skill and ardent zeal for Hadassah projects through the years. She spear-headed the organization of Junior Hadassah in Vancouver, is past president of the Henrietta Szold Chapter, and a past president of Hadasah Council. Cur-reritTy Mrs. Zack is associate chairman for the Youth Aliyah Drive as well as honorary president of Hadassah Council. But she does not limit her work or interest to Hadassah alone—the Talmud Torah, and Schara Tzedeck benefit from her efforts. She is also on the executive of the Conununity Council. Not so well-known today is the fact that Gertie was president of the Council of Jewish Women" Brides group, around 1941.
Mr. and Mrs. Zack are planning a trip to Israel in the fall of this
MRS. H. FROME
"We are Israels children's foster i^arents. Our job is to make their lives healthier and happier stated Mrs. H. Frome, associate chairman for the Youth Aliyah Drive.
Hadassah work is' an important pai*t of Mrs. Frome's every day life and she has served Hadassah's interests for some 35 years, starting in Edmonton around i920 and for 18 years in Vancouver. For the past two years Mrs. Frome has been and is currently president of the Chaim Weizmann Chapter. She has also been associate chairman of .the Youth Aliyah Drive for the same period.
Although Mrs. Frome has worked steadily and sincerely for Ha-dassal^ these many years, her interest and zeal really sky-rocketed two years ago when she visited^ Israel together with Mr. Frome. "When I saw with my own eyes what our money does, saw all those children so well-cared for, so educated, so full of z'est and eager to do thieir share, I really realized that 'no effort is too great for us to help them", said Mrs. Frome. "I hope our canvassers will be greeted gener-oii§ly and with opm hearts, tf know they would be if everyone could see what I saw in Israel," she concluded.
year. "I can hardly wait to set foot in Israel. It's a dream coming true. I know that when we see what Hadassah here has made possible,' and all that -has been done through the Youth Aliyah, it will gladden our hearts and give me strength and energy to face a life-time of helping in
these wonderful Mrs. Zack.
