FIRST RESTITUTION payments have come tlm>u]gh from Germany to two former victims of nazism now living in Vancouver, reported Dr. Hugo Fischer, at a meeting of the Congress board this week. . . . One of the fortunate claimants received the tremendous sum of 6,000 marks or about $1600. ... it wiU be a long time before the €0 active restitutions cases now on the books here will be closed. Dr. Fischer, who is a practicing barrister, has voluntarily applied, himself with commendable zeal to the job of processing restitution claims. A German language stenographer was recently hired part time to assist in this work.

$100,000 ADVANCE—The Congress meeting learned from Irving Chertkow, 1955 UJA chairman, that in answer to the recent appeal made by Moshe Sh^ett in Montreal, $100,000 has been borrowed here against the 1956 UJTA proceeds and forwarded to United Israel Appeal headquarters in Montreal, to be transmitted immediately to Israel. ...
