Ym Kippur services at Schara Tzedeck
Amidst a hushed and reverent silence, facing an open holy Ark, and flanked by a procession of Synagogue elders holding the eighteen Scrolls of Tdi;iah, 'worshippers at Schara Tzedeck wi' thus start the holiest day of the Jewish calendar — the Day of Atohemeht — Yom Kippiir. This is the setting in ^hich traditional Synagogues have placed that most moving and sentimental of pr$yers—the "Kol Nidfe."
This year at Schara Tzedeck the Koid Nidre prayer, markipgtiiie start ic»f die Vom Kippur Servic^, will be chanted on Friday evening, September 14 at 7; 15 p.ni. (candle lifting 00 later than 7:00 p.m.). The sermon will follow the chanting of Kol
Nidre.
On Yo^ 'Kippur day, Saturday, September 15, morning services will start at 8:45 ajn. The sermon will be given at 12 noon and Yiskor Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m.

*T»HE call of the Shofar has sounded and will be JL heard again on Yom Kippur. Once again the Jewish people begin a new year—^5717—with a period of spiritual stocktaking and solemn obser-yance.Tbe Shofar calls to ineditation on the achieve-nients and failures of the past year and to serious consideration of the possibility for greater attainment in the coming year.
On Rosh Hashona and Yom Kippur more than at any other time we are urged to return to the course of righteousness and goodness. .There are^ those who believe that this, is actually coming about and cite as evidence the building of new synagogues in many commijnities throughout America. But there are others who fear that these new edifices may become no more than empty shrines to'righteousness and goodness.
We are still confronted with the tendency to place the qualities of goodness and Virtue on a pedestal, and to regard them as something desirable, but \irtually unattainable in every day life.
As we repeat the sacred and traditional practices and prayers of the High Holy Days, it is well to recall yet again that many things once thought unattainable are now being achieved.
Israel—the Jewish state—so long a mere hope, is today not only a reality but gives living proof of its ability to face up to every danger and cope with every problem of natiourbuilding.
On the world scene the demand to end H-bomb tests is rising to a crescendo; the threat of atomic warfare is actually beginnmg to recede; only a few wieeks ago the President of the United States proclaimed the possibility of "Peace for All Tune."
We see our own land of Canada moving ever forward in social and economic progress and in development of better understanding among all nations.
0 Who'would have thought five years ago that Canada would lead the way in diplomatic exchange visits with the land behind the "Iron Curtain." Is there anyone who then expected a Soviet soccer team to tour Canada, or exchange visits between Israeli and Russian teams?
And speaking of the "Iron Curtain" who would have predicted even a year ago that in the past year
the wrongdoings against the Russian Jews would be virtually admitted by those who were responsible; that Jewish writers and cultural workers would be released from prison in Russia, that Zionists would be freed in Romania; and that a measure of conitact would be renewed between the Jews of Israel and America, and Jews behind the "Iron Curtain?"
Changes long unexpected have come to pass. Yet many dangers still exist. The Suez problem with which only Israel was concerned for so long has become a plague to the Big Powers.
Israel-Arab border clashes continue unabating and the problem .of peace in the Middle East will continue to test our resolve to stand behind Israel with material aid in the coming year.
We cannot be silent witnesses to the struggle against racial segregation in the Southefn United States. The American Negroes merit our unbound^ admiration for their cour^ageous efforts in sta up for their rights.
In Canada too the fight for equal rights, if less spectacular, requires our continued active attention. Mistaken attitudes and prejudices still abound. Laws against discrimination which are. most praiseworthy still have to be fully implemented in practice. Immigration policies still, bring unfair treatment to some groups.
In our own Jewish community as in many others we are ever more concerned about the problems of Jewish education, the future of our youth, the future of our people. Our concern is expressing itself in greater practical efforts for our youth. We may be optimistic about the results especially wherever our efforts benefit from a co-ordinated approach.
The value of the traditions and customs which we recall at Rosh Hashona and Yom Kippur li^ in relating them to today — and tomorrow — to the possibility of a new era of better relations with our neighbors. May we bring back to our daily lives that quality which will motivate us to work with our friends and neighbors everywhere in thfe spirit of true brotherhood.
May we all help eaeh other to inscribe our-selyes for a happy year and a happy future in a peaceful community and a peaceful world.
GA^^ REZNIK, who recently resigned as Caiitor of the Schara Tzedeck Synagogue, has taken up a new position in Philadelphia as Cantor of the Oxford Circle Jewish Community Centre.
Cantor Reznik assumed his new duties in Bhiladelphia just before Rosh Hashana.
Coining to Vancouver from Israel six years ago Cantor Reznik served with Schara Tzedeck here during the entii-e period until his new appointment. as chief duntor of die Precisberg Synagogue.
