Hadassah
hifllilights
The Annual Hadassah Bazaar is' just around the comer—on Burrard Street, to be exact—at the Seaforth Armories, on October 23 and 24. This year's exposition promises to be one of the best efforts of Vancouver Hadassah, under the able and experienced guidance of Mrs. M. Waterman, who has imdertaken the gigantic task of convenor for the second year runniig.
Anita Waterman and her competent executive have been laboring all summer, tying together the many details that must be doi^e to insure a successful event. Mrs. I. Garfinide, ad-Afertising; Mrs. A. Mann, food chairman, aind Mrs. M. Abrams as Ticket Chairman, just to name a fevv, have been toiling devotedly to the cause. But the success of every project depends on every(jpe doing then: share.
This will be the place that you may all enjoy your own favorite dish. What shall it be? PRAKES—BLINT-ZES—HAMBURGERS —"CORNED BEEF' ori rye-^kNISHES—SOUR AND SWEET SPARE RIBS,—and BAGELBURGERS. If this is not enough variety f(^r you I'll aidd a few more dishes next week. Fbr the "Slim Jims" in the crowd'there will be that ever popular Cheese Cake, \ There will be things of interest and fun for the whole family. For those silent uncomplaining members of ] HADASSAH (husbands) there^ will be | many booths to hold their mterest. Among them will be a Live DO IT YOURSELF show, and a MOTOR SHOW featuring the EDSEL. Or if; he prefers to relax completely, he may join'the youngsters in the afil new GAME ARCADE. This is the pet project of the'NORDAU CHAPTER with Mrs. Molly Tenenbaum as chairman, Molly deserves special mention because besides doing her own work, she and Aniti have beeri babying a special brain child. They have found a way to give something away and still^ake a profit, aiid a tidy bit it is too. Thanks to their cleverness and the willingness of advertisers/ we will be giving a^yay handy recipe folders of ..traditional Jewish, dishes.
The Auction always creates lively interest, and- this year, Mrs. Betty Averbach promises .some interesting items to go under the hammer. She wishes to remind you that they would be happy to receive any usable item in your attic.
YOUTH ALIYAH will again have theit* successful' 1001 Booth, and the chairman, Mrs. B. Dayson, is very excited about the exquisite doll that is to be raffled. This doll is very special. It has 10 complete chic outfits as well as a very beauitful bassinette frilled with ribbon and silk. This will thrill any girl.
The DEBOB-AHS are working to capacity on the most beautiful INDIAN SWEATERS for the younger set. You may prefer, the popular white or grey, but I suggest you look at the new pink one. Convener Mrs. Rita RotbsteIn will be happy to take your order.
BaZA.AR. I will have a lot more to tell you about nm week. So until m then cook, sew and sell sell your | tickets.—D. I
M. AVERBACH
- (Continued from page 1) nadian Jewish Congress began m 1919 when Winnipeg sent him as delegate to the first organizational meeting in Montreal. He was staunch supporter and Congress worker during these years, andf ultimately joined the Congress staff as Western Executive Secretary 20 years ago.
Probably no Canadian had such intimate ties and close knowledge of western Jewry as the late Myer Averbach. His frequent tours in conjunction with Congress missions, especially of an educational nature, brought him face to face with the chronic dilemma of educating Jewish youngsters in declining and isolated Western centres. Part of his solution was the Congress Summer Camp, operated in conjunction with B'nai B'rith camp, where Western children attended formal classes. Another phase, of the solutiori^^as his convening of frequent conferences of Jewish and Hebrew school pedagogiies. Mr. Averbach was a one man Jewish School clearing house and teacher ieniploy-ment agency.
He himself had been principal of the Winnipeg Talmud Torah in 1913 and frtm,1915 to 1929 conducted his own Hebrew school, known as the Bet Sefef L'eumi (National Hebrew School.) ' V • '
Myer Averbach was also a longtime member of the Labor Zionist Movenlerit, being one of the organizing founders of the Poale Zion movement and of the Farbarid, in Winnipeg, j Besides his widow Chas-sia, he leaves to niourn him two sons, Abe of Vancouver and Muni S. of New Westminster; one daughter, Mrs. A. Kramer, of Vancouver; five grandchildren; three brothers—Jacob of Winnipeg, Leizer of Los Angeles, and Michael of Edmonton; and four sis-tefii—Mrs. (Annie Goffriian and Mrs. L. Shaeiffer of Los Angeles; Mrs. I. Badner^ Mrs. A. Silvert, Winnipeg.
Eulogies were delivered at the funeral service by Chief Rabbi Dr. A. Kfavetz, J. Freedman and S.^M. Sel-chen, and at the graveside by M. A. Gray, MLA. ■
