NEW YORK—Egypt's quiet but ruthless despoliation of Egyptian Jewry continues unabated, with no overt protests from pther nations, according to "Egypt ill September 1957," a survey just issued by the World Jewish Confess' institute, of Jewish Affaifsj New York. ' ^
Using* the Sinai episode as a pretext, Nasser in November 1956 began to eliminate the country*s 45,000 Jews. There werb no specific anti-Jewish laws ^or were there widespread physical attacks. About 1,000 were arrested; many were forced to quit Egypt under threat of detention; many, deprived of businesses or jobs or forced out of the profesisions, had no option but to emigrate. Within two months after Sinai a mass exodus was in full swing. By September 1957 about half of Egypt's 45,000 Jews had left. • :/ ' ■ ■ - ■
The rapid elimination of foreigners and Jews "soon proved extremely detrimental to the economy," the WJC reports.''This jesulted in certain Jewish' enterprises'^^ bein^ desequestrat-

To cushion the transition to ,a totally Egjjgtianized economy, "Jewish managers'and employees are forced to teach Egyptians to replace them within a short time. Nasser's assistants are. apparently unimpressed by:«||he fact that f^r every Jew three E|yptians are bemg em ployed and production has declinec oy uuc-ualf.
Hate propaganda, absent in the earlier stages of the Jewish exojBk^ has now become evid^t, accwding to reports by refugees. Charges of smuggling cjirrency out of Egypt "is another familiar feature of persecution." In June 1957, the survey states, a military court imposed sentences ranging from two to fiVjB years and fines totalling about $2',000,00 on 75 persons, including 28 Jews (25 in absentia) for- allejgedly smuggling currency out of Egyjpt.

ing accounts of the condemned Jews. There are other pressures reported
by recent arrivals:
The.«Jewfsh community pap» is heavily censored. Recent i^es carry Nasser's picture In ^e spot where flie Ten Conomandments were formerly regularly, displayed. Synagogues are being closed on chaiges of serving Zionist purposes. Public meetings have been banned.
All Jews remaining have special identity cards indicating tibeir re--.li^on.
The survey staties there are no available data on the value of Jewish property in Egypt. Some estimates put }t at about $200,000,000 but the Egyptian holdings of British Jews alone have been estimated ,at more than $250,000,000. Property left by the refugees remains unsupervised unless it is sequestrated by the Egyptians. In many instances houses, factories,' and other premises left by Jews are simply auctioned off as' abandoned property. •
Other" minorities^r-even the^ centuries-bid native ^ Eigyptian Coptic community — have suffered. The Copts, the survey reports, have been reduced to the status of second-class citizens, barred from settlement in newly-developed areas. •
Jews^with .the notkble exception of those holding a Communist state citizenship—are still persecuted. The Chief Rabbi of Egypt has estiniated hat about 5,000 Jews would remain in the pountry. This, the WJC survey points out, would be only slightly more than 10% of Egyptian Jewry a year ago.
