Histadrut opens Israel anniversary drive
Incomparable tenor Jan Peerce highlighted last Sunday's subscription concert by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. This I concert was also outstanding be- j cause the orchestra featured a major Canadian work^ the "Symphonic Gaspesienne" by Qaude Champagne of Montreal, one of | Canada^s best known composers.
The symphony by Champagne was j the biggest Canadian work to be play-1 ed by the Vancouver orchestra in many a moon, it has never been! performed here before and perhaps! relatively few people in the audience had heard it. But it won an enthuisi-astic reception which attests to the fact that it is a fine and impressive jpiece of symphbnic music. Surely there are other similarly deserving Canadian wdrkis which might be per-| formed here.
' The Champagne composition is an I expressive symphony of some magnitude intended to describe the meeting j of land and sea in the Gaspe penin-1 sula. Composed in 1946, it opens most | qniquely with a sense oif mystery and goes on to reveal considerable varietjr I of mood and many intricacies of composition. The orchestra p^Iayed the work very well and Irwiii Hoffinah seemed to derive great enjoyment, in conducting it He displayed a youthful flair for this modern wprL "pie brass section was also at its best in I this compdsitibh.
Guest tenor Jan Pierce ^g in topi form, as he invariably does, aiid he showed himself once again to be an artist who is alwayis in command oiFl

In the view of 'Al-Akhbar*, two ideas were now superseded-—the idea that the U.S. bases throughout the world had any importance, and the idea that any one country wais more "advanced" than another. The world was achieving a new balance, which might well "avoid war and its re-suitiiig disasters, stop the iainbitious and give the small peoples a chance to live on an equality with the great iii rights and obligations."^
