HOLY DAY INSIGHTS
(Continued from page 3) <TROPER UlNDERSTANDING OF RITUALS AND PRAYERS"
The rituals and prayers of the Holy Season must not be expected to perform magic therapy in cleansing us of our sins. Judaism basically offers a rational outlook upon life. Neither sacred objects not* prayers and rituals exercise any magic powers and help us to attain miraculous results. This applies to the concept of repentance as well. There is nothing magic about the High Holiday liturgy, prayers and fasting. They only serve one purpose —to arouse oiu* moral sensitivity and bring about a change of outlook on life, our fellow men and ourselves.
In order to feel the full impact of the High HoUday services, we must always remember that the traditional prayers were composed by men who lived in a different age, who wrote in the style of their time, and thought in theological terms of their age. We must therefore not always take them literally, but rather to understand the psychological and religious message which is as applicable to us as it was to our ancestors, urging us to right our wrongdoings and repent our sins.
