Women's UJA Highlights
From Mrs. Manya Archek, beloved veteran canvasser, who is welcomed back after an absence of one year, comes the report that everybody is giving at least 15 per cent to 25 per cent in increases — not one of her cards has not raised from last year.
But what Mrs. Archek wanted to talk about, understandably, was the time she spent in Israel last summer, and her vivid impressions. She rented an apartment and actually lived in Israel, after the tour ended, and was able to meet the people and talk to them. She tells of many events, including celebrations, festivals, concerts, award-givings and the opening of an exhibition.
"There," she says, "there is a bookshop not only on every corner but it seems that every other house is a bookstore." She, told of the interest in UJpan, the night classes where adults are taught Hebrew, English and another language of their choice.
She tells of living in a kibbutz Mishmar Ha-Emek, which was^ one of the first, over the holiday of Shavuoth, where the celebration of the harvest was "something out of this world" as Manya termed it.
She tells of speaking to two officials there, who asked her how we go about raising money. "I explained to them—and they were happy and wished us success. Without us they wouldn't be able to carry on, and they hope we can do even more with the influx of the new immigrants."
Mrs. Archek concluded with a recollection of a small town in the Negev, only eight years old and which looked like a miniature United Nations with all the different people from different countries. This was turned from stone and wilderness into a modern town of 500 families, in neat houses, who grow their own fruit and vegetables, have a new hospital,' a bank and a kindergarten of 55 children. "But they need more staff, many of the children are social cases," Mrs. Archek' stated, "They need help — they need everything!"
And you, Manya, along with many others, are helping them get it.
Another veteran canvasser, Mrs. Fanny Stede, who raised $619 last year, hopes to double it this time. "Wherever I have gone, I have received an increase."
She does it with pleasure, says Mrs. Steele, who canvasses on foot, and who knows that every dollar will help. Even on a $5 card, she asks for what she terms "a little rescue fund" of $1, and she is not refused.
Concluded . this able canvasser Bless everyone that I call on, especially for the respect they show me."
