Ames brothers top performers
The people are swarming into the Cave Supper Club as thick and fast as the songs the Ames Brothers sing these days. RCA Victor's top selling vocal group is packing them in to the rafters and giving them a smooth, fast-moving, varied evening of entertainment.
Joe, Gene, Vic and Ed, four Boston boys who now live in four different towns in northern New Jersey were started on their way to fame by another brother Marty; who never actually sang in the act. None of them particularly like show business as a life, preferring to let the act stop when they leave the stage.
However, they give exactly the opposite impression as you watch them "work". They seem to be having such a wonderful time, kidding around, never standing still for a moment, infecting the audience with their spontaneous good humour, that it's difficult to think of them as responsible family men, each with from one to three children under the age of 11. Ed, the youngest seems to lead the act itself, and offstage his life revolves around his two girls and a boy, the oldest of whom belongs to a New Jersey Jewish Community Centre. The children have no interest in showbusiness and don't understand what all the autograph hunting is about.
Their fathers look more like athletes (which they are) than entertainers. Minus the heavy make-up, they would" appear to be more ready for the basketball field than the stage. You forget about this though, when you hear them push out "Rag Mop" or. "Sentimental Me", the first of which sold a million records and the second, two million. Their top number is "You, You You" which was waxed in 1953 and reached the two and a half million mark.
They are excellent mimics too, and all their imitations of popular singers are good, especially when they go into the multiple take-off of "four Vaughan Munroes". Vic and Gene are the clowns of the group and Joe sings the classical numbers. His "Toreador Song" wowed' the audience as much as any of the perennial popu-lars or novelty numbers.
