Ukrainians object to Petlura TV program
MONTREAL—About 800 Ukrainians last Sunday picketed the offices of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation here, protesting against a television program on the French-language network, dealing with the trial of Sholom Schwartzbard, a Jew who shot the Ukrainian leader Simon Petlura in France, in 1926.,
Petlura was president of the short-lived Ukrainian Republic, which he set up in fighting the new Bolshevik regime in Russia, in 1917. During his rule, Ukrainian Jews suffered atrocious pogroms in which mafty thousands wer<^ annihilated. Schwartzbard was tri^d on a murder charge in Pa^is^ in 1926, and acquitted when Jthe court accepted the facts of the Petlura-directed pogroms as the motive for Pet-lura's death.
The television series, being broadcast every Tuesday night by CBC, was denounced by the Ukrainian pickets as "^inaccur-ate" and as ian "insult" to the 500,000 Ukrainians living in Canada. Placards carried by the pickets demanded the immediate firing of the CBC men responsible for the broadcasts. A seven-man delegation of the pickets met, during the demonstration, with J. J. Trudeau, CBC director of information who promised to relay their grievance to CBC president Alphonse Ouimet, at Ottawa. (It has since been learned that the program is being continued.)
arrangements have been made for a hiking program with a difference. Plans have been set to utilize- Island Lake, situated 12 miles from the camp, for the hiking and overnight hiking outings. Weather permitting, it is expected that during the first period ,out-of-camp trips will be of two or three days duration.
The camp committee chairman, Irvin Lipsky, has announced that the newest improvement in the camp will be a new recreation field. The field, presently under construction, will enable the camp to; expand its sports program and has provided for a number of innovations in sporting events, The Jewish and Zionist content in the ^ogram will be at its usual high standard, under the direction of Gessie Golan, shaliach' ifom-Israel. Mr. Golan has arranged'for a number of exciting events afed the general theme of the camp for this summer will be "Lifie in Israel".
The camp is very pleased to annouiice that Mrs. F; Maltin will again be the camp cook. AH those who attended Camp Hat-kivah during the 1959 season were thrilled with the excellent menus which Mrs. Maltin prepared for the campers.
The Dr. William Morris Hospital, located at the campsite, will be staffed by Miss Barbara McKenzie, R.N., and Dr. Marion Dobson will be the camp doctor.
