Chaim Salomon of Jewish-Portuguese ancestry, became an ardent patriot during the American Revolution. He advanced something like $700,000 of his own money to finance the Continental Army and to maintain the credit of the bankrupt American government. Hardly a cent of this money was repaid. Salomon was twice imprisoned by the British for his activities on behalf of the colonists.
Veteran communal leader Moe Cohen was re-elected chairman of a reconstituted United Jewish Appeal Board at a meeting this week of representatives of the two major UJA "partners", the Zionist Organization and the Canadian Jewish Congress.
The new Board, which will remain in office for a one-year term and will have the responsibility for all matters, pertaining to the UJA, is composed of: ten representatives of each of the two pirganizsatipiis as >rell as a maximum of ten fco-opted members, "'■^^■l,;. ■ • .; . ■"
