Pi«3ctis turned serious and sol-jimn. 'flt'5 a matter of principle;' he^id. "It reminds me of r story about a family that was |i great need, and when some J^ative who died left them fifty lollars once, they took the mo-py and bought a painting f^r |)ie dining room. Everybody cri-fcized them for their spend-lirifting, but I understood them. |hen you are having a tough le, it's good to have things
)und that remind you th&t Ijere is a better life; and in the iiddle of trouble a little beauty [Id fun is good for the morale."
Lbel, who had entered the dis-|te without conviction, sudden-i switched ideas.
^There's something else," he |d. "Israel, in spite of its dif-liilties, is country. A country Jii't think only of today. It must Ink of the future, too. To build lountry, one of the things you I to do is to make other people [0 don't know much about you |ieve you are really a country want people to visit, and le to live, and to invest. I ir country is just a poor relp \i among other covmtries, peo-will be sorry for you, and |y may give you a little help, they v/ill not consider you a |asch of a country. But when ' come, and you put them up luxury hotel, and you show [m theatres, and monuments, fine restaurants, like in Is-L they realize you really got [lething there. And if you as a finishing touch a golf frse, they are completely im-|?sed. They have confidence I'ou and they begin to believe |/our future. And that way, [/ will give more to UJA and will buy more Bonds and r/ will invest more because know that what they are ig will produce results. How you worry about the future country that has a golf [rse? It's bound to succeed." ^ou know whrt you are?" Borah. "You are a human fneleon. Every two minutes 'change color. What side are on, anyway?"
iHe is on the side of the best irnent," said Pincus. "He is laminded."
jCt me tell you something," Borah. "When you are in a 1, you put everything into the Jle. You can't have guns and ter at the same time. You |to have austerity. The pretty touches can wait until you I safe and secure. To win a no matter if it's hot, cold or |warm, you got to go all out.
remember in Korea —". If your country waited until las safe and secure to build a course, golf would become ict," said Pincus. "What fitry is safe and secure today?
our own country is in dan-i Our President is calling on |o sacrifice. But does he ask stop playing golf, or going Iheatre, or building opera es and golf courses? As a er of fact, you yourself men-d that both Eisenhower and edy play golf. Do you know a President of the United s has on his mind? He ws better than anybody else t deep peril we a-re facing, the Presidents play golf. It es them. It's good for the try." ! i
tTou are really very far frcrn point when you talk lifi:e " said Borah. "What amuses .s that such an un-golfer.like has suddenly become the .d champion for golf . . . :e I said FOR golf, not OF
'ou, of course, are OF^olf," red Pincus. "In your hands If club makes wind like an

electric fan — and that's all."
"Atnother scotch - and - soda," Borah called out to the waiter. His own golf was too serious a matter for him to accept the sneers of his friend with equanimity.
The three men seemed to have run out of arguments. The waiter brought the second scotch-and-sod?- and Borah sipped it slowly. As it blended with the first, he began to feel a warm glow inside him. The expression on his face softened and became almost benign. It was good to be here in this nice dub in this great country with two wonderful friends. Why should he quarrel with them?
Pincus and Abel exchanged glances. They knew the symptoms.
After a long silence, Borah
turned to Abel and said. "Twenty-five dollars for an honorary membership? You know, I'd like to join. I'm going to Israel next year and it would be nice to play eighteen holes in the land of our forefathers." He peered into the future. "Yes, very nice indeed," he said. "Where can I get an application to join?"
"From S0l Miller. The one on Shadow Lane. You know?"
"Do I know him!" said Borah. "His handicap is twenty-two. To such a golfer they give the honor of soliciting honorary member' ships? What, Israel needs is a golf advisor. I'll talk to somebody about it when I get there."
Abel winked at Pincus. "Come on outside," he said to Borah. "A little fresh air will do you good."
