OUTSTANDING NEW CITIZENS VENTURE FORTH IN LIFE

During the course of the past few years, reports on the progress of Taimud Torah graduates have come to our attention, bringing news of achievement in al] the desired fields—scholar, larsh^p, citizenship end athletics.
Certainly native talent and ability should not be understated, but the extra individual attention possible in classes: the good study habits a.nd constant exercise of active minds that are prodded to application by the double curriculum, rather than being permitted to slip into apathy through lack of challenge; the sense of security estp-blished by knowledge of, and pride in, our culture, history and background—all these things combine to produce a student who is well adjusted and well prepared to venture : forth in life and become a well

Sandra Waterman has been able to maintain an "A" stand-ing from grades 7-9, having first entered Point Grey Junior High school p.nd Magee since leaving the Talmud Torah. In the athletic field, Sandra first received a Physical Education award in Grade 7, Ba-ntam Cup and Runners medal in grade 8 and remains an active participant in gll school sports through grades 9 and 10. Magee High school offers only 4 "Block" awards annually to grade 9 students, of which Sandra was one of . the winners. The Block s.ward is given for outstanding effort in P.E., scholarship, entertainment and service.

Susan Zimmerman moved to Edith Cavell from Talmud Torah and was winner of both a citizenship and scholarship, award while serving as presi-demt of her class. Not satisfied with proficiency in two lan-guagesj Hebrew ^nd EnglishV Susan went on to win a French award and one of the last scholarship awards given by King Edward High school. For extra curriculum Susan entered ♦:he 13th Anniversary of the State of Israel essay contest and came up a winner. She still excels in the field of elocution and is a member of Eric Ham-ber's Drama club and on the executive of the McMillan club.
Malcolm Weinstein \yas the first Talmud Torah graduate to chant his Bar-Mitzvah Haftorah. The first year he left Talmud Torah he received both a scholarship and citizen award from Edith Cavell school. He continued to win scholarships throughout high school, and graduated to attend University pharjng the second highest standing (with another Jewish boy).-At the university lie has managed to win a governmeut scholarship every year.. But Malcolm is not all brain—after gradtiaiting from Talmud Torah," he served as president of U.S.Y. and went on later to serve thq entire Pacific Region as president of A.Z.A. and now holds the position of secretary to his fraternity.
Lanny Beckman, another graduate, also has maintained m honor standing throughout high school and university. Lanny has received many bursaries and scholarships, graduating from second year with an average of S9.9.

The National Council of Jewish Women of Canada, at its recent national executive meeting in Toronto, passed a resolution in full support of International Co-operation year. Letters to this effect have^ been->ent to Prime Minister Diefen*' '^aker, the Right Honorable Howard Green and -U.N. Acting Secretary General, U Thant, recommending United Nations sponsorship.
In reference to' this resolution, while on a field trip to the Lethbridge section, Mrs. V. Drache, national vice-president stressed that, "in a changing community, women are fast becoming n^the leisure class. With- fewer 'babies and longer life, women are in a strategic wsition to influence the direction for positive voluntary action through the dempcr-atie process in community life."

In 1921 he was apponted secretary of the Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Winnipeg, and held that position until 1939, when as
a manufacturers agent, his firm transferred him to Calgary, Alta. where he resumed his various communal activities.
In March of 1949, he was again transferred, this time to Vancouver, and iminediately sought a Congregation with which to become affiliated, and chose Beth Israel. His synagogue experience soon became evident, and he was elected to th board of dirctors in 1954, and the fol-Ipwing year was elected to the office of second vice-president which he held for two years; then first vice-n'-esident for two years, and finally president for the two years of 1959 and 1960; and currently he is the honorary financial secretary.
In 1957 Mr. Ginsberg was elected president of the Pacific Northwest Region of the Urtited Synagogue of America, and in May of 1958 a very successful conference was held in Harrison Hot Springs at which he presided. Many of his ideas for the Region were adopted and plemented.

Next to the synagogue, he was deeply interested in Masonry. In 1925 he was initiated into Mount Sinai Lodge in Winnipeg, in 1935 w^as elected the Master of the Lodge, and in appreciation of his dedicated work through the years, he was in 1955 elected an Honofary Life Member of the Grand Lodge of Manitoba.

He has one son, Albert Basil, living in Calgary, and one daughter, Mrs. Marvin (Lois) Stark, who each have two children of their own. He is "aided and abetted" in his varied activities by his understanding wife Thelma, who possesses a very fine record of her own for com munity service in the three ci ties where they have lived.
