Those who dreamed of Jewish independence looked to the day when the land of Israel would be a virtual 'Garden of the Middle East." They hoped that this land, which had lain fallow for coUntless generations would once more be awakened to life; when its thin, fevered soii would-be enriched, and wheh its deserts wOuid receive-iW^ter iuid be made once again di*able as in aneientdays.

Stage two Will be the creation of industry so that once-cities and "towns are created, there Will be full employment for all those who must settle in the SOUth. Israel is a tiny country now boasting a population of slightly better
- than two million. • Over half the land area of Israel is in the South, and if the population is . to grow it can find its place only in this south-
. em land.
The third element is people. The year 1962 was a burdensome year for immigration to Israel. All immigration projections were exceeded, and when the record is eventually re- . vealed, we will find that in 1962 Israel experienced her largest influx of people since the end of World War II. These people are ready land willing to begin.a new life in the South. They will face hardships, they will be exposed

Dozens of canvassers are now busily engaged in contacting prospect tive Bond buyers. It is hoped that these canvassers will be given a warm reception, and that the entire community will respond in a manner in keeping with the outstanding record of this City in the work for the restoration of Israel.
For those unable to make large investments, a hundred dollar purchase can,be made over a long period through the Bond Time Payment Plan.
We are convinced that Vancouver wiU not be found wanting in the tasks of making the Negev green.

RABBI WOYTHALER
Rabbi B. Goldehberg of Schara Tzedeck synagogue and Rabbi B. Woythaler of Beth Israel synagogue, issued a joint statement calling for maximum support for Israel during the current State of Israel Bond Campaign and emphasized the importance of Israel Bonds to the development of the State of Israel.
Text of the statement signed by the Rabbis is as follows:
"As we pause to consider the uncertain world around us and the fate of our people at home and abroad, more than ever before we see Israel a rock of hope and salvation for the Jewish people.

Cotton, peanuts and .sugar-beets have been introduced into Israel as productive commercial crops, joining a variety of others like citrus fruits, vegetables, wheat and. tobacco. Today Israel exports biillions of dollars worth of frtoid^stufCs annually: "Made in Israel" k ; a slogan gaining JH: popularity all o\^r the world as Israel expands her industrial products, chemicals and cars, refrigeratoirs and radios, ceramics and canned goods are among the manufacr tured products being produced in Israel.

RABBI 60LDENBERG
"A world in the process of profound change has placed heavy obligations on the State of Israel to receive a renewed flood of Jews fleeing from irisecuri-.ty and the threat of persecution.. The pressure to receive such large numbers oi newcomers makes truly urgent Israel's programme to conquer the Negev desert and make it a livable place for its new citizens.
''Not only heroic determination and self-sacrifice, but large-scale financial resources are necessary to reclaim this wasteland, to provide an irrigation system, to build new towns and roads, to construct new housing, factories and schools. !
"It is this situation which makes it imperative for the Jewish community to give the maximum support to the Israel Bond campaign. The people of Israel look to us to lend them the funds to carry on the notable economic progress made possible during the past decade by the proceeds of Israel Bonds."
