Manitoba names first Jewish Cabinet member
WINNIPEG
The first Jew
named to a Cabinet in any Canadian province other than Ontario, Maitland B. Steinkopf, was sworn in as Provincial Secretary and Minister of Public Utilities in the Manitoba Cabinet. He is the son of the first Jewish attorney in Western Canada, Max Steinkopf, who came to Canada in 1889, and is a 50-year-old Winnipeg attorney and civic leader.

His Excellency, the Most Rev. Sebastiano Baggio, Apostolic Delegate in Ottawa, replied to the expression of condolences conveyed to him by Michael Garber, Q.C., President of Congress, on the passing of Pope John XXIII, as follows:
"I am profoundly moved to receive your letter conveying the condolences of the Jewish communities in Canada on the occasion of the death of His Holiness, Pope John XXIIII. I beg you to accept personally my sincere gratitude, and to convey it to all those who have associated themselves with your good wishes.
"I am pailticularly consoled by your reflections on the life and work of the late Pontiff. I receive them as testimony that the spirit of fraternal charity for which he prayed and worked does indeed live on in the hearts of men of good will.

He described at length the achievements of Mrs. Lepkin 'n establishing and directing the Children's Theatre, stating that although the theatre had been very successful in its initial year, there was great need for expanding its program in the near future. He emphasized the correctional and therapeutic value for children from backward countries or broken homes and said a great improvement has already been shown in num-rrous cases among the more than 70 children who participated last year.

Mrs. Dolsen holds a B.A. degree from University of North Carolina, as well as a teaching certificate with a major in school music, and an A.T.C.M. in violin. She has taught music in the American public school system, as well as violin at University of Saskatchewan.
