The number of immigrants reaching the safety of Israel's shores in the last four years - close to 200,000 - is merely a number. This year another 60,000 are expected. Another number.
But for Jews of the Free World who are called upon to help their brethren across the seas, these numbers are something special. As a matter of fact they are sacred, because each statistic represents living people . . . mothers, little children, teenagers, fathers ...
Sacred because these statistics afford us an opportunity of fulfilling the most hallowed Jewish" tradition. ... The Mitzvoh of Charity that will give People another opportunity to live as free, dignified, human beings.
