Highlight of this year's annual Youth Aliyah luncheon hsld last week was the presentation before some 450 women of a national citation to Mrs. Max Teitelbaum for forty splendid and devoted years of service to Hadassah-Wizo.
In receiving her award of recognition from Mrs. M. Wine, national vice-president of Canadian Hadassah-Wizo, Mrs. Teitelbaum accepted "with joy in my heart, happy in the knowledge that our work has been blessed in my lifetime ^with the birth of the State of Israel."
Mrs. Ml. J. Waterman, president of Hadassah Council chaired this first festive spring luncheon ir. the Community, which is also traditionally the single largest annual Jewish gathering in the city. Following the invocation delivered by Mrs. I. Feldstein, Mrs. Waterman introduced Youth Aliyah chapter chairmen and Youth Aliyah committees who graced the long colorful head table.
Citing the community's devotion to the annual Youth Aliyah project, which comprises a m.^n's and women's campaign, the Hadassah Council president referred to it as "our responsibility and sacred trust." In addition to the yearly donation from Que.sn Esther group, presented by Mrs. E. Zack, Mrs. Waterman; announced receipt of the annual $500 cheque received from the group of eight men in the community, who call themselves the "Thursday - nighters - that-meet-on-Monday."
Mor> is Feldstein brought greetings from the Pacific Region of the Zionist Organization of Canada. He spoke in glowing terms of'the noble and glorious record of Youth Aliyah in help-^rang; (^iMrjen'!^ the leadership; dedication and devotion of this cause exhibited by Vancouver Hadassah.
Chairmarf of th^ Men's Youth Aliyiah 1964>driye, Mrs. G. Lancaster'expressed heartfelt thanks
i to the men. of the Community | and to the ardent support of the \ drive's workers. "We are still working towards our goal," she | said, "and to date we have col-1 lected over $9,000."
Mrs. H. Fitterman, convenor of the Youth Aliyah luncheon, praised the work of each member of her industrious commit- j tee and relayed to the enthusias-, tic audience that $13,505 had been raised up to that point.
Guest speaker, Menachem Hassan was introduced by Mrs. M. Thai. He noted at the outset of
his speech that one out of every 20 Israeli inhabitants is a former Youth Aliyah ward. Many of there Youth Aliyah . youngsters have become actively engaged in what is one of Israel's major industries today, the maritime industry, which Mr. Hassan him-| self studied at the Hebrew university.
Tracing the Biblical origins of Israel's shipping, Mr. Hassan barkened back to the days of Zebulon, the Judges and to the era of King Solomon when th.o country became very prosperous through the sea. Connecting the early beginnings with Israel today, the speaker noted that the Jewish State is now 22nd aniong nations with shipping fleets and has nine regular shipping companies, the largest of "which Mr. Hassan is associated ! with] in Canada.
Mi;s. M. Rothstein thanked Mr. Hassan. Announcement .was made, as well, of the recipients of doot prizes, Mrs. M. Blank and Mrs. B. Brail, wh-se names were drawn.
