Camp Hatikvah... that's where Evelyn Neaman, at age 11, was introduced to yoga. Now in her early 40s, a longtime teacher of yoga and founder of the Tikkun (Healing) Yoga Centre, Evelyn weaves together for her students and in her personal life the practice of her Jewish faith with that of her faith in the practice of yoga.
With degrees in cultural anthropology and multicultural education to add to her skills, Evelyn, through her classes, explores the similarities between the ancient paths of yoga and those of ancient Jewish traditions. The "ultimate" similarity for Evelyn is the "search for oneness." Evelyn also relates Jewish holidays, themes and rituals to the study and practice of yoga. Her classes often begin with a Hebrew prayer. Class details, 604-738-9295.
As for the kinship between yoga and Rosh Hashanah (just weeks away), Evelyn explains that, on one level of many, as the High Holy Days evoke the notions of renewal and reconciliation, yoga, equivalently, means imity. With that in mind, Fll see you in shul, Evelyn... or in class.
"Kids are better ofTbeingjvmk food vegetarians than jimk food meat-eaters," says Simon Chi-towitz of the pro-vegetarian and animal-rights group Physicians for Responsible Medicine. Perhaps. But eating both, kids get a balanced junk food diet!
Event producer Cindy Charkow tells me that well-known local MD/writer/broad-caster Art Hister will emcee when Combined Jewish Appeal and the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver present an evening with David Frum, noted Canadian-bom journalist, broadcaster, author and former speechwriter for President George W. Bush. It happens Tuesday, Sept. 10, 7:30 p.m., at ScharaTzedeck Synagogue. Details, 604-257-5100.
And, says Cindy, a dessert reception follows while David autographs his latest laook. So don't get coffee stains on your copy before he signs it!

On the same day as the annual Gay Pride Parade in Tel-Aviv last June, the first male same-sex marriage was registered at its City Hall.
If variety is the spice of life, as it's said, then the spicey variety of superb international musical talent at this year's Festival Vancouver can indeed be labelled "hot!" Among those who served up the heat... Toronto jazz pianist Carol Wcisman and Vancouver classical pianist Robert Silverman.
Back in 1963, Lionel (Rusty) Bernstein stood trial along with Nelson Mandela and 15 other anti-apartheid activists. A veteran of the South African Com-mimist party, Bernstein died in July at age 82.
Six or so months ago, riding a local bus, a Jewish Food Bank (JFB) volunteer begins chatting with a group of young Canadian and U.S. members of the Church of Latter Day Saints. He finds out that they're all on an 18- to 24-month "good deeds" mission, a traditional Mormon program for yoimg adults. The volunteer tells them about the JFB and now the young missionaries are there each and every JFB day. A mitz-vah... Mormon style!
The bad news: Incurring $25,000 in debts, Russia's oldest weekly Jewish newspaper, the International Jewish Newspaper, closed last May.
The good news: Reportedly, an anonymous oilman has pledged to pick up the $120,000 annual
cost of the paper's production. It returns to newsstands this month.
Vannica is a short film about loneliness "with an eastern European flair." It's the most recent effort of Vancouver-based, up-and-coming writer/director Steve Rosenberg. He's just returned from the Palm Springs Short Film Festival where Vannica got an enthusiastic screening. And... co-starring in the film is noted local columnist and actress Muriel Kauffmann.
Should mention, the Palm Springs Short Film Festival is Uae largest of its kind in North America.

of San Francisco has become the first female president of the Israel Public Affairs Committee, the United States' most influential pro-Israel lobby. The committee has a staff of 130. It has 65,000 members. Its budget, $19.5 million ... hopefully not mostly in pledges.
Jez San is a 36-year-old British millionaire computer game entrepreneur. At 12, he received a computer... an advance bar mitzvah gift. A "natural" at writing software, Jez got his first game "published" at 18. At 20, he "properly" set up his company. Argonaut.
Last year, Argonaut won the contract to develop a Harry Potter computer game. Netted Jcz's company $7.4 million US in royalties for the three months ending Dea 31,2001. Jez never made it to university. But then... he's a "natural."

I read that U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan received an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth for his "outstanding contribution to global economic stability."
Sitting here gazing at our monthly Visa statement, I feel my wife Elaine is indeed entitled to equal recognition for her own contribution to economic stability... no matter where we might find ourselves on the globe. □
