A.J.E. sociol probes concept of Messioh
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Parker will host a B'nai B'rith Evergreen Sunday evening home social at their residence, 5869 Laurel street, on May 30, at 8 p.m. Young couples who are not already members in B'nai B'rith are welcome to come and be a part of the evening's discussion.
Brother of the lodge, Rabbi Marvin Hier, will introduce the interesting theme, "The concept of a Messiah in Jewish life." "This", points out Rabbi Hier, who is spiritual leader of Congregation Schara Tzedeck, "is the belief, in traditional terms, of what Jewish concept of a 'Messiah' means."
Discussion among the couples will delve into this and other topics during the Evergreen Adult Jewish Education home social.
With no restrictions on immigration, the State of Israel faces hundreds of problems with mass immigration from Yemen, Malaba Province of India, Morrocco, Algeria, Tunis, North Africa, the Atlas mountains, as well as Eastern Europe. These people brought new diseases to Israel. Hundreds were carriers of diseases that could have destroyed the State simply by being transmitted through local water supply, local mosquitoes or personal contact. The Health Ministry, working with all its agencies, conquered what the rest of the world felt was impossible. It has also increased and maintained the standard of health of the country for ■both Arabs and Jews.
MDA is a signatory of the Geneva Convention and carries out prisoner-of-war obligations and also extends aid outside the borders when disaster strikes. It is not yet fully affiliated with the Intemaional Red Cross.
In 1953 Canadian Hadassah-WIZO agreed to help MDA. Before that time ketchup bottles of all sizes and shapes were used for the collection of blood. Now the transfusion centres have regulation Baxter Bottles, now manufactured in Israel, the result of Canada's gift.
MDA is responsible for Israel's blood . . . collecting, processing, freezing, storing and distributing.
South Africa and Rhodesia Friends of MDA, over the years, provided the funds for building the Col. David Marcus Blood Fractionation and Plas-
ma Drying Institute at Jaffa. Canada has equipped and maintains the blood donor clinic there. The Institute has a complete laboratory with its own power generator housed in an underground bomb shelter, in case of any attack by air. This laboratory is equal to the best anywhere in the complicated production o f dried plasma, gamma globulin and the several other Jife giving blood fractions. There is constant research going on at the institute for more and better blood derivatives, better ways of storage, and, in cooperation with the country's medical research institutes, the inquiry into blood defects and diseases is furthered.
Israel is not a welfare state as we know it. Israeli hospitals do not have casualty departments. Municipalities do not have ambulances for street or industrial accidents. THESE SERVICES ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY O P MDA. There are over 60 MDA First Aid stations throughout the state. In 1950 the Knesset passed the MDA Law, giving it full recognition for its services in war and peace/
The ambulance fleet, which numbers 200 serves road and industrial accidents, border incidents, the sick and the aged and the young . . . over 1,00€ babies have been born in the ambulances. The life of an ambulance is about 5 years and the Friends of MDA in Great Britain have pledged to supply at least 30 new vehicles yearly.
Canadian Hadassah-WIZO is also pledged to support the
Port Hospital at Eilat and the Post Polio Hospital at Sara-fand, and to also help build more MDA first aid stations.
"Much of Israel's economic future and military security lies in the Negev" . . . Ben Gurion. Last December ground was broken for a first aid station at Arad. It is a fast growing centre in the Negev and is very close to a number of strategic and important projects . . . the atomic research and the vital potash. Ben Gurion considers it the soul of the Negev.
The Port of Eilat is Israel's gateway to Asia and Africa. It lies at the southernmost extremity of the Negev on the Red Sea. The Red Sea is of vital importance now to Israel's shipping in view of the loss of Suea* facilities. Oil flows through pipelines, from the Port of Eilat fo the Mediterranean.
Dr. R. Morriss, an English Jew, is the dedicated mentor of the Canadian Hadassah-WIZO Marine Hospital at Eilat. He is the obstetrician, pediatrician, family doctor, surgeon for industrial accidents at King Solomon Mines, military doctor for the fortress guarding the area and quarentine enforcer for the boats from the Far East.
In 1953 Polio came to Israel, riding the crest of mass immigration. Hundreds of children were left crippled. The Rehabilitation . Centre and Hydro Therapy Pool at Sarafand serve both Arab and Jew. The pool, built by Winnipeg Hadassah, is the only one of its kind in the Middle East. Now that polio is conquered. Dr. Gelther, the head physician is turning his attention to Cerebral, Palsy. Because of unattended births and improper delivery methods in native countries, there are many palsied children in the immigrant families.. The par-
ents of these children are now being educated to recognize the problem and to seek proper help.
The doctor-patient ratio in Israel is 1 to 420, the highest in the world. Their medical problems are probably also the greatest in the world.
