THE HILLS ABE AUVE
By LEO H. MARCUS
I can recall trayelling through the Jerusalem Corridor in 1951, and viewing the gloomy and depressing pictm'e presented by the landscape. The area around Ein . K e r e m was especially sombre. As far as the eye could see—^nothing but rock. The Ju-daean Hills were completely denuded of any vegetation. The barrenness certainly belied Biblical description of the proud cedars which once bedecked these hills.
And where there was no vegor. tation, there was no soil, and no people. Here were the man-made ruins of a Jewish pastoral people who once found their place in the sun on the Hills of Judaea.
The picture portrayed in 1966 is a different one. The Hills are alive and once more making their contribution to the continuing history of our people.
I made a personal pilgrimage recently to Ein Kerem. As far as the eye ccoild see there exists a panorama of green. Jerusalem pines are growing in their thous-

ands. The soil has been recreated and terracing is prevalent everywhere. And the People of Israel have returned to these Hills — have built homes and villages— and are bringing the blessings of progress back to the Land.
The Canadian contribution to this venture is a significant one. The Canada Forest created by Canadian Jewry through the instrument of the Jewish National Fund has left its indelible mark on the Hills. The pylon markers displaying the coat of arms Of each of our 10 provinces bear testimony to the united determination of Canadians to significantly play their full role in the most dramatic undertaking of this generation—the restoration of Zion.
Now that the Canada Forest project is complete, the Canadian Jewish National Fund has undertaken a new conquest—^Dvir. In tliis arid desert area, which borders on the Jordanian border, Canada has already begun a new aKorestaticn project — The Centennial Forest. This Forest will nisT-k the Centennial of Canada, and will herald again new life where there is todav emptiness and the curse of God.
"Unless we conquer the desert, the desert will conquer us," said David Ben-Gurion. It is within our grasp—^the possibility of being the Victor in the ongoing battle with the elements.
