Busy volunteer in all seasons
Maurice Lifclius has helped out people and organizations for decades.
ALEXKLINER SOCIAL COLUMNIST
The retail business, in one form or another, is how Maurice Lifchus made his living. Yet, it's commimi-ty service to which he gave of himself, you might say, wholesale.
Bom in Winnipeg in 1917, Maurice celebrated his 85th birthday in June. Left home in 1933 during the Depression because it meant one less mouth for the family to feed. This could explain his 13 years of tireless commitment as a foimder and executive member of the B'nai B'rith Non-Sectarian Food Bank.
Of B'nai B'rith, Maurice is a 50-year member... Ancient Free Masons, 60 years... Shriner, 25 years. A Red Cross donor clinic volunteer, Maurice has personally donated 67 pints. Fourteen years, he chaired Oakridge Bingo, which funded the Multiple Sclerosis Society and B'nai B'rith youth groups. He's a long-standing volunteer for the Jewish Family Service Agency. And community service awards? I'll need an entire column to list those.
So what's the now retired Maurice been doing since his 85th? Lotsa bridge playing. And lotsa reading... Vith the help of my magnifying glass, that is."
The Goodman Report, a Greater Vancouver annual newsletter for owners and investors of multi-family dwellings ... in lay terms, rental apartment buildings. "News and views from David Goodman," as David puts it.
An apartment and investment specialist, David began publishing his newsletter in 1983 because, says David, "I felt a lack of market information and helpful property management tips available from a professional insider's point of view." Hence, David's report! Details, 604-714-4778.

Uri Bcilin, 23-ycar-old Israeli rock singer, son of Oslo Accords architect Yossi Bcilin, received mostly positive reviews for his new CD, Occupation. The album title, avows Uri, "has no connection to my dad's line of work."

To extrapolate on a familiar biblical notion: There's a time to inscribe and a time to be inscribed. To inscribe... you can inscribe a book at the Isaac Waldman Jewish Public Library ♦in the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver to honor someone or some special occasion. To be inscribed ... in The Book, that is, is a matter for ypu to take up in your shul at tliis time of year.

When, in 1904, Abraham Wertheim opened his Wertheim department store in Berlin, Germany, it was the largest in Europe. "The land on which the store stood, also owned by the family, was seized by the Nazis... later, by the Soviets. The building was destroyed during the war.
Late July, negotiations began between the German Finance Ministry and the Jewish Claims Conference for what is today said to be "Berlin's most prized piece of real estate."
hi 1937, Adolf Hitler built his chancellery on part of the site, complete with the bunker in which he committed suicide at the end of the Second World War.
"Go ahead, make my day." Clint Eastwood said it, "Dinky" Dean Riesncr wrote it. Dirty Harry was the movie. A child star in the 1920s who became a successful screen and television writer, Riesner has died at age 83.
"Nu gey, mach mein tug." That's Clint saying it in Yiddish. Sounds tougher in English.
It's sort of a modem-day, non-musical Fiddler on the Roof story, but with only one strong-willed daughter instead of five. I'm talking about My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a laugh riot of a movie about traditional Greek family life in the United States. And, like Fiddler on the Roof, chock full of quirky characters. A movie worth laughing through ... and identifying with ... whatever your ethnicity. It's at Fiflh Avenue cinemas.
Belgian-bom modem art collector Charlotte Bergman made aliyah from New York in the 1960s, bringing along her extensive collection (Marc Chagall, Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso and others). In Jerusalem, she helped then-mayor Teddy Kollek foimd the Israel Museum.
Bergman promised to bequeath her collection to the museum if, in exchange, it built her a house on the premises ... she lived there for three decades. Bergman died in July at 98. The masterpiece-filled house will now be used for museum receptions and special events..
Leni Ricfenstahl, whose "hypnotizing" documentary films for and about Adolf Hitler brought her both international acclaim and notoriety, has recently turned 100. Coinciding with her birthday (and released in English) is a biography by Rainer Rother, Lcni Ricfenstahl: Tlie Seduction of Talent. Riefenstahl lives in Munich, Germany..
Despite oppressive heat, some 2,000 Barry Manilow "maniacs" gathered last month for a concert by the Brooklyn-born pop singer in Manhattan's Bryant Park.
"This is above and beyond the call of duty," said Barry about liis fans. "My Jewish guilt is kicking in, having these people stand in the sun." □
