Montreal Seminary graduates eight
MONTREAL—The United Jewish Teachers' Seminary, sponsored by Canadian Jewish Congress, held its 18th graduating exercises June 16, at Shaare Zion synagogue here, when eight students were given temporary diplomas. Permanent diplomas are granted after students have taught for two years in the field.
In announcing the graduation, Dr. Samuel Lewin, associate education directcT of Congress, who also directs the Seminary, stated: "It is now 20 years since the teachers' training program was instituted in Montreal, first comprising two schools: one for Hebrew and one for Yiddish. Subsequently they merged into the United Jewish Teachers Seminary, operated and administered by Canadian Jewish Congress.
"During this period," Dr. Lewin continued, "over 200 students have graduated and now occupy positions as principals and teachers in major Jewish communities in Canada, as well as in USA and Israel. The Seminary is open to students who have high school graduation or equivalent thereof and have an adequate background in Hebrew, in which language most of the courses are given, and in Yiddish. The Seminary offers courses in Bible, Prophets, Jewish history, Hebrew language and literature; sociology of Jewish Life in Canada; educational psychology; methodology of teaching; arts and crafts; kindergarten; singing."

TORONTONIAN LAUNCHES NEW CAREER IN ISRAEL
JERCSALEM—At the age of
64, when most men are looking towards retirement, Max Sharp, of Toronto, is thinking ahead to a new career—hotel building in Israel. Specifically, he plans to erect a 15-storey tourist hotel in Netanya, right off the beach.
He has a clear insight into conditions here. "The plans have been drawn up by a Canadian architect. The tenders for actual construction will go out within three months. It would take us one year to build such a hotel in Toronto. I hope we can finish it here in 18 months."
Mr. Sharp—^who is Hebrew-speaking — spent five years in this country during one of the most difficult periods of the Yishuv. As a boy of 18, fired by the pioneering spirit, he came to Israel in 1920. For three years he worked at Bitanya, in the Jordan Valley. For the next two years, he worked as a builder, mainly in and about Har Hacar-mel in Haifa.
It was his "builder's trade" which he took to Canada with him when he left in 1925: he stayed on—to work in the building trade. (His wife, Lena, is active in many Zionist causes, including Pioneer Women. They have four children and 18 grandchildren.)
Half a dozen years ago he switched to the hotel business in Toronto. Today he is President of the Four Seasons Motor Hotel
(168 rooms on an eight-dunam plot), and the Inn-on-the-Park" (400 rooms on an 80-dunam site).
The $2.5m. needed to erect the hotel (an approved investment), is being raised among Canadian and American businessmen.- The syndicate, headed by Mr. Sharp, has already paid $250,000 for the pot in Netanya.
Mr. Sharp, who has three brothers and one sister living in Israel (another brother is here with him from Toronto on a visit), expects to spend three or four months every year in one of the suites. He expects others — especially Canadians—to do the same.
