Sense of Jewish identity
Shalom B.C. has appointed a new executive director.
Laura Moscovitz has been named executive director of Shalom B.C., replacing Daniella Givon who retired earlier this year. She assimied her duties June 24. hi her new position, Moscovitz will be responsible for managing the organization's operations, administration and volunteers, including working closely with the board of Shalom B.C. in the fulfilment of the mission and strategic vision of the orgtmization.
"Laura brings a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of operations and human resources management critical to Shalom B.C.," said Deborah Freedman, board chairperson. "I am confident she will be a tremendous asset in her new role."
Prior to joining Shalom B.C., Moscovitz was the chief operating officer of B.C. Girl Guides, a 30,000-membcr nonprofit organization, during a period of strategic growth and development. Prior to her work in the nonprofit com-mimity, she had a career as an in- Laura Moscovitz
dependent consultant focusing on
organizational, administrative and human resoim^s management. Her volunteer background includes working with the Camp Hatik-vah board and then the Canadian Red Cross for four years.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to an extraordinary organization," said Moscovitz. "I look forward to working with the board, volunteers and staff to build upon Shalom B.C.'s history and vision. I am very excited to be working within a community in which I have been bom and raised and experienced so much benefit from. I grew up near the JCC, went to Peretz school, Beth Israel Synagogue Hebrew school, JCC day camp and later Camp Hatikvah for 13 years as both a camper and counsellor, was a member of Young Judea and travelled to Israel with USY Pilgrimage. All of these experiences have helped me form a very strong sense of Jewish identity."
Shalom B.C. has welcomed newcomers to the community and offered information, referral and camaraderie to hundreds of Jews who have moved to the area fi-om elsewhere over the past 13 years. The addition of a centralized volunteer centre under the management of volimteer centre director Debbie Kofiman one year ago continues to contribute to the vitality of the B.C. Jewish community by strengthening service agencies and organizations, while also providing mitzvot opportimities for individuals. The aim is to work vnih all segments of the commimity-synagogues, schools, service agencies, cultural groups, institutions and fimd-raising agencies.
"Laura's professionalism and sensitivity are critical as Shalom B.C. continues its expansion and seeks to meet the growth of the B.C. Jewish community's welcome, information and volunteer services needs," said Freedman. □

Louis Brier Home and Hospital High Holiday services were "the busiest yet," according to Ralph Rosenberg, longtime Louis Brier resident and services co-leader. He added that they were "the best and the most beautiftil because we had ; so many returnees." All particularly appreciated Chaim Ko-• mfeld's shofar blowing on the second day of Rosh Hoshanah. As part of Yom Kippur services, Lee Simpson, board of trustees : chair, was invited to speak to an overflowing congregation of residents, family members and community friends. In her fourth High Holiday appeal, Simpson spoke about oxir family and commimity blessings and asked the community to give generously for more Jewish activities and programs at Louis Brier. The High Holiday appeal accompanies the latest issue of the Louis ; Brier newsletter,
