Byron Thorne has assumed the position of physical education director at the Jewish Community Centre, succeeding Paul Brown-stein. Mr. Thorne, a graduate of , the school of physical education and recreation, U.B.C., has had extensive experience in physical education and recreation fields.
His association with Y.M.C.A. in Vancouver and public recreation agencies in Winnipeg and Coquitlam, has provided him with an excellent background in developing diversified, active programs within a wide age range.
Most activities, according to Mr. Thorne, will be people centred, emphasizing fun with development and fitness as in-

DATELINE OTTAWA — Substantial amcmnt of "Jewish" parliamentary business was left unfinished when the second session of the 27th Parliament recessed last month to re-assemble at the end of September. It was hoped that during the recess, the proposed joint Committee of the Senate and House would at least meet to hear briefs and evidence about the proposed Criminal Code amendments on hate propaganda. Unfortunately, while the Senate named its representatives, the House failed to do so. This "um-teenth" delay leaves the definite impression that the federal Gov ernment is procrastinating on hate propaganda legal curb, has been four-years since mod ern-day action was taken by Milton Klein^ MP, in the form of a

must now be held in abeyance, is any action about the presence in Canada of known Nazi criminals. Parliament, as voiced by a Government spokesman, has washed its hands of this miatter, to the effect that nothing can be done in that Canadian law actually protects these Nazis. If nothing else, these individuals who murdered Je^s and others, should be publicly named in the House of Commons or Senate. What Canadian law fails to achieve perhaps can, in some measure, be realized by public opinion.
And while Parliament is in recess, the Conservative Party will stage a convention. This will in^ elude naming a leader and, no doubt, som6 proposals as to party policy. In this instance it should be possible to have an expression of how the Conservatives feel about Canada's policy re hate propaganda, Nazis in Canada, and currently, policy statements over the future of the Middle East.
To date what has been asserted in Parliament, particularly by the Rt. Hon. John Diefenbaker, would indicate a decided pro-Israel stand by the official opposition. Other top-echelon Conservatives, including potential leaders are also on public record as wanting a Canadian policy that is pro-Israel. The NDP, at their recent con-

vention, are on public record visa-vis their policy as to the Near East: (a) a just solution for the Arab refugee problem; (b) free passage for Israeli shipping through the Suez Canal and Gulf of Aqaba; (c) end of Near East armament race (d) economic aid for the area; (e) a UN presence between Israel and Arab countries; and (f) withdrawal of Israeli forces from Arab territory. At the insistence of David Lewis, MP, deputy party leader of the NDP in the House, the convention voted in favor of Israel's possession of a united Jerusalem, despite objections from many delegates that the NDP was pro-Israel and perhaps anti-Arab.
If the Liberals had a convention today their Mid-East policy as represented by current Government action v/ould read as follows: (a) they are opposed to a united Jerusalem and so cast their ballot at the UN when a vote was taken on this matter; (b) they favor free passage for
Israeli shipping through the Suez Canal and the Gulf of Aqaba (be it that in the case of the former, Israel was never permitted to use the Canal, and in instance of the latter, it was only unilateral action by Israel which opened tho Gulf of Aqaba); (c) like the NDP. they favor Israeli withdrawal; and (d) they follow the UN in whatever it may propose about the Near East. And in this regard one cannot but ponder how effective the UN is, in the face of reality.
From what we arc told hero in Ottawa, many Liberals—Jews and others, are most unhappy with their party's Near East policy. Yet we have been rather hard pressed to discover anyone getting up and publicly demanding a change in policy, at least on an official level, and it includes rank and file Liberals. But this has not gone unnoticed.
Contemplating the Near East stands of our political parties, it is most interesting to ponder what the reaction and results would be if there was a federal
election this summer! We will let
readers decide for themselves.
