WEST COAST CANTOR COMING
TO B.I. AUXILIARY SERVICE
Rabbi Edward M. Gershfield of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America will be joined by Cantor Jonathan Silo of Hollywood, Calif., when Congregation Beth Israel's expanded Auxiliary services are held this year for the High Holidays.
Beth Israel Auxiliary Services will take place at the Centre auditorium in order to accommodate the many new families who have joined the Congregation.
The synagogue executive made the decision to enlarge the Auxiliary Service, to be able to provide adequate seating for all
Temple services slatd tonight
Regular Sabbath evening services will be held tonight at Temple Sholom in the Unitarian Centre, 49th Ave. and Oak St., commencing 8:15 p.am. Rabbi John M. Sherwood will conduct services with Arthur Guttman chanting liturgical music.
Special family services will be held next week when children whose birthdays fall during September will be called to the pulpit for a special birthday blessing.
Classes in the Religious School begin tomorrow,-Saturday morning, at 9:30 a.m. Parents who have not yet registered their children can call the Temple office, 263-9333 or Amos Netter, principal, 266-2119.

Born in Israel, Cantor Silo has lived in United States since childhood, and has been on the West Coast for, the last 10 years. He is a graduate of Theological Seminary Teachers Institute, New York. His present occupation is drama superintendent at Bran-d€is Camp, California. He is a member of the Cantorial Assembly of America.
For five years he served as cantor for the High Holidays at Beth Sholom Synagogue in Memphis, Tennessee. He was Cantor at Valley Community Centre auxiliary service in Los Angeles, where Rabbi M. Vorspan occupies the auxiliary pulpit. Last year Cantor Silo conducted auxiliary services at Beth Sholom Congregation, one of the largest Conservative synagogues in Los Angeles.
Noted for his excellent tenor voice and wide knowledge of liturgical music, the Cantor has given many solo concerts in the Los Angeles area and in Israel.
The Auxiliary service Rabbi, Dr. Gershfield has been assistant professor of Talmud at the school of Judaica at the Seminary since 1960 and has'been television program editor for the Seminary's famous Eternal light series and the Jewish segment of "Direc-
tions".
Special Beth Israel family membership enrollment at modest annual dues and reduced Building Fund contribution, entitles new members to all regular Beth Israel facilities including
Religious School enrollment, wedding, Bar-Mitzvah, Bat-Mitz-vah, youth and adult education programs and cemetery privileges.

The newly-constituted Jewish Community Fund and Council, the organization that resulted from a merger of the Jewish Community Coimcil and the Jewish Community Fund, will hold its first annual meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 8:15 p.m. in the Jewish Community Centre. President Joe Segal will officiate, and I will report on events of the past year-and-a-half since J.C.F. and C. was born.
Involvement-of the organization in. the problem of marijuana smoking by an increasing number of young Jewish people will come under scrutiny and discussion.
Members of the board of directors will be nominated and eiected for the coming term. These will, in turn, elect officers at the first meeting of the new board of directors.

Selichot at S.T. ushers in seoson
An invitation is being extended to the entire community to join "Lishmoa el Harine el Hatfilah" —^to listen to the voice of song and prayer, and to usher in with dignity and solemnity the High Holy Day season at Schara Tzedeck.
Cantor Moses Preis will chant the service accompanied by Schara Tzedeck Choir. He will offer a traditional interpretation of the Selichot service with select compositions befitting the occasion.
A pre-Selichot collation, arranged by Schara Tzedeck Sisterhood, will be served in the auditorium at 11:15 p.m. prior to the service, to be held on Saturday, Sept. 14.
The entire community will be welcomed at both the services and pre-Selichot Kiddush which will usher in the season of penitence and prayer.
BJ. MEN'S aUBTO HOLD BREAKfAST SUN.
Beth Israel Men's Club will start off the new season with a Breakfast this Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. in the Maccabee lounge of the s3magogue, chairman Harry Baker announced this week. Significance of the various "Aliyot" and high points of the High Holy Day services where laymen will be participating will be featured on the program.
All men of the Congregation are being invited to attend this function. Those who have received "AUyot" for the High Holy Day services will find the program highly interesting.
Morning service at 9:30 a.m. precedes the breakfast.

Dr. S. Mmfgoshes dies
NEW YORK—Dr. Samuel Mar-goshes, distinguished journalist, lecturer and Zionist leader, who served for the past 15 years as director of public relations for Jewish National Fund of America, died last month after, a long illness. He was 81.
