Keeping track of child poverty
Michael Goldberg often comments on TV or radio about public policies.
alex kuner SOCIAL COLUMNIST
Michael Goldberg migrated to Vancouver from the United States in the late 1960s. First day in Canada ... "Bingo!" Lands a job with the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver (JCC) as a youth woricer... same work he'd been doing in the States. Michael thrai gets a master's d^ree in sodal work from the University of British Columbia. Goes on to work predominantly in community organizations as a youth worker, pn^ram co-ordinator and executive director.
For 15 years now, Michael has served as director of research with the Social Planning and Research Council of British Columbia. In this capacity, for the last five years, he's provided the most significant research on child poverty in the province. Michael's report is due to be released at the end of this month.
For the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver, Michael's done reports on seniors, people with disabilities and, most recently, on poverty in the Jewish commujiity in the Lower Mainland. He's often on television or radio commenting on economic, social or fiscal policy.
Michael's 1960s migration... bit of a "Bingo!" for Canada too, eh?
Poland, 1939. Revered Chas-sidic leader Mordecai Shalom Joseph Friedman, the Sad-gorer rebbe, and his wife, Mira, emigrate to Israel shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War and are "therefore spared from an almost certain tragic fate during the Holocaust."
All this due to the efforts of prominent Polish businessman Jacob Wohlman, the late grandfather of local brothers Arthur and Richard Wolak.
I read the complete story in a Sept 20 Jewish Press article written by Arthur.
Essential to Jewish thought is respect for the human body. The noted 19th-centuiy German Rabbi Simon Raphael Hirsch puts it this way... "Respect your own body as the receptacle, messenger and instrument of the spirit"
In this context, the large-format film The Human Body, now at CNIMAX Theatre at Canada
Michael Goldberg
Place, explores the body's wonders and complexities on a scale "never before captured in the history of the cinema." Details, 604-682-4629.
After an estimated damage of $4.5 million US as a result of devastating mid-August floods, Prague's Jewish community appealed to the Jewish world to help rehabilitate the andcnt Jewish quarter in the Czech capital. As a first response, Israel flew in 55 pumps to remove floodwater fix)m two synagogues... 13th-century Old-New and 17th-century PinScas. The Old-New Synagogue is said to be the oldest active prayer house in Europe.
I'm standing in the JCC's Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery with my art aficionado friend. We're both admiring Jcannie Kamins' current exhibition, Fabric of Life ... ink drawings, wa-tercolors and fabric appliques. My fiiend suggests I, too, should have an exhibition ... of my columns. "Yes," he says, "Threadbare Fabric of Life." Some fiiend! Jeaimie's show runs to Dec. 4.
Toronto-based husband-wife founders of Kaeja d'Dance troupe Allen and Karen Kaeja have lately been receiving in-
, temational raves. The company's short films, adaptations of its dance works, are hits
' at film festivals around the world and are featured on Canadian television. The acclaim and interest have much to do
with the dance troupe's six Holocaust-themed works. This fall, the eight-person troupe tours Spain and India and performs at Toronto's Ashkenaz festival.
Should mention ... Allen's the son of a kosher butcher.
My xmcle Nathan, the opera fan, dubbed my kid sister, Elaine, "Daughter of the Regiment," after Gactano Donizetti's opera of the same name. Why? He'd usually find her with me arid my "regiment of cronies" hanging out at the comer candy store.
. Vancouver Opera now pays tribute to my sister with performances of this delightfully comic, musically rhapsodic work at the Queen E. Nov. 23,26,28 and 30, 8 p.m. My sister says thanks. Subscription and Regiment information, 604-280-3311.
A tzedakah tid bit! Gifla from the Louis Brier.Home and Hospital "wish list" improves the quality of life for its residents, CEO Nick Braithwaite tells me. He also says that a donor recently donated not one item, but the entire wish list... "anonymously." Indeed, tzedakah at the highest level! ,
Want to know more about the wish list? Phone the Louis Brier Jewish Aged Foundation, 604-261-5550. ^
When it comes to Jewish, what could be better than food and Fiddler? And both in one evening... the ultimate! That's what we're doing, Elaine and I,... the ultimate. First... we're going to a deli for Jewish food. Then, we see Fiddler on the Roof, now at the Vancouver Playhouse until Dec. 21. Fiddler's "a work of art," says the New York Daily News... to which I raise my glass of Manischewritz. Fiddler details, 604-873-3311 (deli details not included).
Canadian-bom funnyman David Steinberg says his father never lived to sec his dream come true... "an all-Yiddish-speaking Canada." □ ' .
