Jewcy singles at Leap
BAILA LAZARUS EDITOR
Get out of the rainy November weather for an evening of dancing, diatting and shmoozing. Jewish singles from the Lower Mainland, Victoria, Seattle and Edmonton will converge on Leap studios next week for the party Jewcy. Michael and Roiy Presents' fifth venture is subheaded with the attention-grabbing "We're the kids your rabbi warned you about."
"2002 has been an outstanding year for Vancouver's Jewish community. We've never been closer to each other and never have there been so many options for meeting other Jews in Vancouver," said Michael Horowitz, who is presenting the party with Rory Richards. "The Michael and Rory party train is full steam ahead. The momentum created by the support of our community has been tremendous.... What a strong finish to 2002 with Vancouver's Jewcy. This will whet the appetite of our community as we enter 2003. Return of The JewTsh Love Potion is only months away."
Expanding on Horowitz's assessment, Richards added, "^Ve are as committed as ever to making neutral Jewish space in Vancouver - no strings attadied Jewish fun, a place where the only objective is to have a great time with young, like-minded individuals who just happen to be Jewish too.
"There are himdreds, perhaps thousands, of Jews who have moved to Vancouver from different places in recent years for their education, career, etc., and are not yet connected with Jewish culture in Vancouver. They are in their mid-20s and 30s and for a lot of those individuals this imique type of event is the point of least resistance back into Jewish culture."
Jewcy is billed as a "grassroots, independent and vminhibited dance party for all Jews with a passion for no strings attached, unadulterated fun and frolic." It takes place Saturday, Nov. 23,9 p.m., at Leap Studios, 1675 West 2nd Ave. Entrance is $15 at the door. 10 years of winter coats
Beth Israel Synagogue's 10th annual winter coat drive starts next week. Over the past nine years, Beth Israel volunteers have collected more than 5,000 warm coats, jackets, sleeping bags and blankets for those in need in the Lower Mainland. The items are given to family service organizations, women's, children's and family shelters, the homeless, the mentally ill, the unemployed and new immigrants.
•The single most important piece of clothing you can give to someone in need this winter is a coat," said Rob Wilson, manager of the Living Room, a drop-in centre for people with mential health issues. "There are simply not enough shelter spaces in Vancouver, so giving someone a coat and a blanket is sometimes the best we can do."
Coats, blankets and the other items can be dropped off at Beth Israel, 4350 Oak St., Nov. 18 to Dec. 20, Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.-hoon; Sunday, Dec. 8,9:30 a.m.-noon. For more information, call Elayne Shapray at 604-266-2250. □

Cliucic Davis at AGIVl
Chuck Davis, renowned writer, reporter and Vancouver historian, will be the keynote speaker at the Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia's annual general meeting Tuesday, Nov. 26.
As a columnist for the Province for many years, Davis wrote about various aspects of Vancouver's history. He has edited two books that chronicle Vancouver's history almost day by day, event by event and commimity by community, and is an authority on many topics, including the history of the Orpheum. He will talk about the colorful life of this elegant theatre that was built in 1927; it opened as a vaudeville house and, from the 1930s through to the '70s, was a movie theatre and a concert stage. The grand theatre was saved from demolition and refurbished for future generations when the city bought it in the 1970s.
The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. on the lower level of the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver. Members and friends are invited to attend. For more information, call 604-257-5199. □
