STUDENT POWER REFLECTS ADOLESCENT RERELLEON, IDENTITY SEARCH - KAPLAN
While the student rebellion on university campuses may appear to be a new radical movement, to teacher-philosopher Dr. Abraham Kaplan, it is an old story. He described the phenomenon rather as the eternal, universal and ageless battle between the generations.
Addressing a capacity audience Nov. 12 at Beth Israel auditorium, the University of Michigan philosophy professor pointed out that the number of students involved in extreme campus radicalism is no more than three to five percent. But he said there are between 30 and 60 percent of college students who are very deeply concerned about other matters.
Currently visiting professor at the University of Hawaii, Dr. Kaplan examined four facets of the student revolt: the psychology, sociological background, political implications and finally, "most important of all", the moral and philosophical side of the matter.
"I find the rebellion against the old as the most heartwarming perspective of the situation," he declared. "No matter what happens, in the course of a few years, time will be on the side of the older generation."
Psychologically, Dr. Kaplan told the assembly that he sees in the movement for student power a very large component of adolescent rebellion. However, in so-
ciological terms, he described the
search for identity as the crux of
the situation. "This is particularly pressing : in a society in which, instead of • an identity, we are given a set . of identifications," he declared.
"In modern times, all of us live
not as the people we want to be, ; but as involuntary selves, as the
people we must be, whether we
will it or not."
He saw the youth as being without help in their search for a true identity, explaining that he : feels no paths are laid out before ' the young today.
When he discussed the political aspects of the problem. Dr. i Kaplan anticipated that students i would not be in agreement with I him. He believes that there is a blunder concealed in the very notion of student power because.
according to Dr. Kaplan, the simple undeniable universal fact of the situation is that no group or individual can say that they have "the" power.
Dr. Kaplan feels that society has been imposing more and more responsibility on the younger gen-
. eration but has denied them
! power.
"Increased responsibility without power is an intolerable situation," he said. "You can't have it both ways. If a mature sense of responsibility is expected of students, then they must be treated as though they are capable of a mature sense of responsibility."
In terms of the morality of the problem. Dr. Kaplan stressed
that he believes it is desirable for students to have a greater share in making decisions. He supports greater participation on part of students "not because this will result in better decisions but rather in better students."
But he underscored the moral imperative for the young of the • freedom to share in decisions,
"While freedom involves the ; right to make mistakes," Dr. Kap-' Ian stated, "that right, in turn, ■ is inseparable from the duty to i pay for the mistakes you make. I To be responsible means you are I prepared to be held responsible."
Dr. Kaplan's lecture was held under auspices of Beth Israel adult education committee.

They came by separate routes, our 3 wise travelers to the East.
They met, judging by the picture, in Beersheba.
Details of our travelers' routes (let's call them tours) will be found in the column to the right.
They make happy detailing for anyone anxious and ready to get away from it all.
And wise enough to do it by tour.
A tour, for those who don't already know it, is the sanest way yet invented for seeing the most (and getting the most out of what you see) with the least amount of travel irritation, aggravation and discomfort.
A tour of Israel this winter is something extra special. The weather is balmy, resort-type weather.
Perfect walking weather in the old city of Jerusalem.
Perfect driving weather along the historic coastal road in the Northern Negev.
Perfect excursion weather down at the lowest point of earth, in the Dead Sea.
Or on the heights of Mt. Tabor, or at nearby Megiddo, where Solomon once held summer court.
Another important thing to remember about tours is that they are economical.
Example: our first wise man spent 9 deluxe days and nights in Israel, with top hotel accommodations (meals not included), transfers, plus sightseeing, for $499* including airfare. Could
you do better in Miami?
Example: our second wise man came by the "Israel Freewheeler" Tour. This one includes roundtrip flight, accommodations at a guest house for 9 nights. Ford Escort U-drive sedan for 9 days with 250 kilometers free (extra mileage at 8c per km.) All for a fast $444.*
Our third wise man had more time. And money. He chose a three week tour to Israel, Rome, Madrid, Lisbon and London for $833.* This covers air fare, transfers, hotel accommodation and breakfasts. Also sightseeing in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, Rome, Madrid, Lisbon and London. Also (are you exhausted?) excursions to the Dead Sea, Bethlehem, Hebron and the Galilee.
Doing it on your own, you simply could not see it all in the same amount of time.
You would waste precious hours on transfers at airports. Arranging sightseeing trips. Wrestling with the baggage as well as the language.
And you certainly could not do it for the same amount of money.
Yet, EL AL tours offer so many variations, with so many departures, you can practically write your own where and when ticket. That's the picture. Except for a closing thought about the picture above.
The wives of our wise travelers stayed in the hotel, playing canasta while it was being shot.
Being infinitely wiser, they wouldn't be caught dead on a camel.
