BENJAMIN WESTON PASSES HERE FEB. 3
One of the West*s pioneer fur dealers, Benjamin Weston, passed away here Feb. 3. He was 86 years of age.
Born in Brok, Poland oh March 11, 1883, he came to Canada in 1907. He had married the former Regina Wex in Warsaw in 1906.
Mr. Weston took up residence in Calgary where he was a merchant and in 1921 moved to Cran-brook where he operated a dry goods store and bought raw furs. He came to Vancouver in 1928 and was a raw fur dealer until 1939 when he founded Weston Fur company on Granville St., a wholesale and retail fur business. He retired from business two years ago.
A resident here for the past 40 years, Mr. Weston was a member of the original Jewish Community Council, of the Achduth Society, and was an ardent chess player, affiliated with two chess clubs.
He was predeceased by his wife, Regina, in 1962. Surviving are sons, David and Bernard of Toronto; three daughters, Mrs.
Mrs. S. MendJeisofan passes in Bellingham
Mrs. Sarah Mendelsohn of Bellingham, Washington, passed away Feb. 2 at the age of 75.
A resident of Bellingham for the past 65 years, she was born in Scopia, Lithuania. She was a life member of Hadassah and well known in the Jewish communal life of her community.
Predeceased by her husband and a son, Leon, she is survived by sons. Jack and Robert, both of Vancouver; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Bellingham on Feb. 4 with Rabbi John Sherwood and Cantor Fred S. Gartner officiating. Interment followed at Beth Israel cemetery in Bellingham.

Alfred (Eva) Toban, Mrs. AUen (Rosaline) Segal and Mrs. E. A. (Esther) Smith, all of Vancouver; one sister, Mrs. Gitel Sonna-bend of B'nei B'rak, Israel; 14 grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren.
Funeral services took place Feb. 4 at Schara Tzedeck chapel with Rabbi Marvin Hier and Cantor Moshe Preis officiating. Interment followed at Schara Tzedeck cemetery. Chevra Ka-disha was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Edith Sweid passes liere Feb. 7
Mrs. Edith Sweid, long time resident of Vancouver, passed away at the Vancouver General hospital Feb. 7 after a short illness.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jacob, in 1955, founder of J. D. Sweid Meat company. Both had been residents here since 1918.
During her lifetime she was affiliated and actively involved in numerous local women's organizations, including B'nai B'rith Women Chapter 77, Lillian Frei-man Chapter Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women and Schara Tzedeck Sisterhood. She was particularly interested in the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Jewish Home for the Aged and, as convener for many years of their annual teas, v/as instrumental in raising substantial funds for this project. This activity had to be discontinued during the past few years due to her state of health.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Al Polo of Calgary, Alberta, Mrs. Max Hanson of Vancouver and Mrs. E. Conger of Portland, Oregon; ten grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held Feb. .9 at Schara Tzedeck chapel with Rabbi Marvin Hier and Cantor Moshe Preis officiating. Interment followed at Schara Tzedeck cemetery. Chevra Ka-disha was in charge of arrangements.
Gregory Ognistoff interred liere Feb. 9
Gregory Ognistoff, resident of 4675 Watling St., Burnaby for four years, passed away here late Friday night, Feb.'7. He was 75 years of age.
He was one of a large group of Vancouver Jewry who were born in Siberia and then settled in China after the Russian Revolution. He eventually moved to Israel where he lived for 14 years prior to coming to Vancouver.

SUSAN AIZENMAN .
Appointment of Susan Aizen-man -as secretary - registrar of Camp Miriam was announced this week by Camp Miriam Board of Directors. This will be her second consecutive year with the camp.
A native of Calgary, Miss Aiz-enman is departmental secretary with" department of economics, U.B.C., and secretary to its chairman, Dr. A. D. Scott.
Miss Aizenman was on the Jewish Community Centre staff for three years prior to returning to university. She graduated from UBC in 1967 with a B.A. in sociology.
In addition to her position at the university, she is secretary to Canadian Jewish Congress, and personal secretary to the Hon. Dave Barrett, M.L.A. She is currently an advisor to Tamar chapter, B'nai B'rith Girls.
"Camp Miriam is indeed fortunate to have a person of Miss Aizenman's qualifications directing camp registration this summer," stated Arnold Selwyn and William Ornstein, co-chairmenof the board. During her term as registrar last year, she initiated many new registration procedures and features which greatly facilitated registration during last year's most successful season, they noted.
Registration for the forthcoming 21st season has now officially begun. Parents interested in registering their children are being urged to do so early by contacting Miss Aizenman, 688-6815 or 327-4377,
Habonim will host Interntitioaal dmces
On Sunday, Feb. 23, 8 p.m., Habonim will host the annual International Dance Night, an evening of ethnical diversity and joyous celebration for the entire community. This event is held in honor of Brotherhood Week, a time to join hands in dance and song to elate the true feeling of unity and brotherhood in search for a world of peace for mankind.
Many traditional ethnic groups will participate in producing a blend of cultural splendor. Professional and amateurs alike will join in spirit to bring a full program of enjoyment.

Golden Age Party set Wed.
Irene Samuels Branch of National Council of Jewish Women will be giving their annual Golden Age Party on Feb. 19 at the Centre. Starting at 8 p.m., the evening will include dancing, the Beth Israel Choir, food, and a special surprise number. All Golden Agers will be welcome to attend.

The Centre is now accepting applications for Summer Day Camp Staff. Anyone-between the ages of 16 and 25 with some experience in Jewish group work or Centre group work may be eligible. All applications must be in by March 1. Sol Pavony, 266-9111, has information.

A tiny tots program is being introduced at the Centre next week, specially designed for four year olds. Involving i>laytime on the gymnasium, followed by swimming lessons in the pool, Moti Aharoni, Centre swim director, will be in charge of the program.
There will be two sessions per week on Wednesday and Friday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. beginning Wednesday, Feb. 19. Registration and information are available at the Centre.

Speaker for Golden Age meeting this Monday, Feb. 17 will be Emmett N. Casey, executive director, Western Institute for the Deaf. Mr. Casey holds a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and has worked for many years in the field of hearing loss. He has done research, written articles and lectured on problems of handicapped.
Mr. Casey will conduct hearing loss tests and will speak in general On the problems of those handicapped by hearing loss.

Temple Sholom will read Cdvesiont code
Temple Sholom will hold regular evening services tonight, 8:15 p.m. in the Unitarian Centre, 49th Ave. and Oak St. Babbi John M. Sherwood will officiate.
The Torah portion this week contains one of the most ancient law codes known to man,,called the "Covenant Code." This section of the Torah will be read and translated along with a commentary.
Temple Sholom will welcome the community to worship with them tonight and also attend, the Oneg Shabbat.
