through offering interested and friendly assistance to these newcomers.
According to Mr. Ezran, some six or seven persons have spearheaded formation of a Sephardic ; group here, giving tmstintingly of their efforts, time and money to bring together an estimated 70 Sephardic families who have not found a meaningful contact to date with the existing community.
A weekly Sabbath minyan is conducted in a private home and discussions, singing and social activities are held from time to time. Two synagogues here have assisted the mjnyan through loaning a Sefer Torah and prayer books.
Mr. Ezran saw as the chief aim of the Sephardic group to bring these newcomers into identification with the community's existing schools and communal activities. In other places, the Sephardic commimity is always very conscious of its communal affiliation, he pointed out.
He estimated that perhaps only 15 children from the 70 Sephardic families attend Jewish educational institutions here, and stressed* the need for this situation to be ameliorated.
It is also the group's hope that a Sephardic Congregation will be established in Vancouver in the near future.
