"Excuse me, would you be able to tell me the philosophy of Day Camp?"
"Philosophy? Gee, I don't think ... Jim stop hogging that ball— you've had your turn, let .some-bt)dy else ^jhave a chance. I'm sorry. About^the philosophy. Well, whoops! I think they'll be fighting over the ball .soon. You'll have to excu.se me. Guy.s—guys! O.K. fellas everybody around me."
The interviewer then went to another counsellor with a quieter group crowded together around something mysterious.
"Excuse me—"
"Larry is the name."
"Larry would you be able to tell me the philosophy of Day Camp?"
"Day Camp philosophy? Well— don't get too close to the spider guys."
"I noticed they were huddling around something."
"They're watching the spider make a web. You see, yesterday we were sitting on the Centre lawn when one of the kids felt a spider on his arm. They jumped and screamed and ran in all directions. They even tried killing it. Well, I just sat them down, told them a few stories about spiders—you know the one about David and Saul—so now all they want to do is follow spiders. Isn't that crazy? Oh yes, philosophy— 'm sorry about the side-track. Gee, I don't know. Ask Marshia— She's the talkative iype." "Marsha, would you be able to

tell me the philosophy of Day Camp?"
"Isn't that beautiful? It's tc; decorate the room for the One Shabbat tomorrow. They decided and planned the Oneg themselve you know. They're going to rea poetry, light candle.s, sing song —ooh, I'm .so excited." I "Philosophy? yeah, well, think basically you've got to lev kids. Ask Harry, he's our Uni Head."
A little frustrated, but deter mined as ever, the interviewer stared Harry square in the eye and demanded an answer.
"Philosophy? That shouldn't be too difficult. We try to instill a sense of curiosity and creativity, perhaps getting the child used to the idea that learning can be more fun than mere games, We try to create a domestic group spirit, helping them make decisions, take responsibility and to tolerate the other guy. And, then, of course, it is a camp so we try as much as possible to stick to the outdoors. We tend to get out of the mechanical city and into the peaceful natural surrounds."
"Tell me, Harry, how come the counsellors don't know this philosophy?"
"Is that what you think? Ask a Jewish mother if she ever studied psychology?" ;> i

TRADE DEFICIT DOUBLES
JERUSALEM
Israel's trade
deficit doubled in 1968, reaching 452 million dollars due to Israel's huge defense expenditures abroad, paid for in dollars. Fifty million dollars of Israel's hard currency is tied up in France as the result of De Gaulle's embargo—money which Israel paid in advance for planes never received. Israel was therefore forced to increase her imports in 1968, which exceeded her ox-ports, thus creating an unfavorable trade balance. Israel's import was 1,000 million dollars; her export, 600 million dollars.
