PROJECT MAGEN DAVID—
Since I began this "attempt to organize a joint historical research project among Bulletin i readers, many people I meet on i the street volunteeJr their infor-1 mation or opinions to me about ' the origin and age of the Magen David as a Jewish symbol. But written response, so far, has been limited.
The quality of what I have received is excellent. This is a research problem on which almost every Jew has some opinion; and there are probably as many different opinions as there are Jews. What is yours? Write to this co\-. umn today.
IS THIS A MAGEN DAVID?
I listed irf'the Specialized Russian ' Catalogues- at my disposal. Perhaps some of my readers-can volunteer information.
My own rationalizatiqn about it is as follows: Since this stainp IS of the "lowest denomination-one kopekT—it would have been used on a newspaper, or on a bulk mailing, which was not a., common practice in Bussia 'at that time. Since this time was -before the day of Russian pre-cancels, this would be a local cancellation, used in some big city much as pre-cancels were later-?used on this class of mail. The clue to the name of the c|ty is the numeral "5" in the centre of the design. But which city? \ ~

A Magen David eanceliatlon on a Russian stamp, used during the period of goyerament sponsored pogrtwnsJj
Had I paid several dollars for this stamp I would question the authenticity of-its cancellation, but since it came to' me in a cheap collection in which the average cost of eachx stamp was less than half vff cent, I must conclude that it is genuine. No one would bother with fabrications at that price.
Thsi stamp was used between 1902 and 1909. THis is indicated by the fact that it is perforated 14^/^x14, Jlarlier printings of the same design and color were perforated in a different gauge Beyond this I can find nothing about it. This cancellation is not

TRINIDAD, A BRITISH
CROWN COLONY, near the
northern coast bf South America, used. four Magens David on each if its stamps from 1896 to 1909. From 1909 to 1913 the number was, reduced to two, as illustrated. In 1913 Trinidad became a united colony with Tobago, and the two Magen David motifs vy^ere continued in use uritii 1922, but only on thjB two highest value stamps: five shillings and one pound. ^-.-■■■■v
Though Tririidiad" now has a Jewish population variously estimated at 120, anactiveZionist organization and B-'WIZQ, unlike its near neighbors of Curacao and Surinam,can find no; record of an old established Jewish settlement Thus I find no greajter connection - between Trinidad's stariip designs and its Jewish pbp-lation than I can- find in the case ol the Russian cancellation.
Biit, keep these items in mind before you make your final judgment about the Magen David. In the meantime I will be

i bringing additional items to you] attention from /time to time. Since writing the above I haVJ j discovered that the "Holy Lariq , Philatelist" of Aug.-Sept. 195j Vshowed a Russian ppstcai^d witl the Magen David cancellation. also had a Russian transit post-j mark dated Mar. 18, 1897 arid^ Strassburg, Germany, postmark!! This dater is: riot clear;; but appear^ 'toy/bje/Mar.-J2p-^|^^^ ;;;
Iti respdnse; to the editor's ;ap peal for information, Albert Gold of' East Greenwich, R I., volunteered the information that the ; various post offices iri St. Peters-i burg each used a different geometric design with the Post Office number inserted. They, were used between 1866 and 1904. Though Mr. Gold .did not state the source of his information, it seems adequate. : v ' ,
The use of this cancellation, however,; on this particular postcard is/ariother example of Russia's postal inefficiency. Mute cancellations of this nature are acceptable on domestic mail but On iritei-riatiorial mail the Universal Postal Uriion requires caricel-lations (except when in a state of war) that show the city of origin, the date and the time of day the letter was posted. v
While it is quite oByious that Russia did not intend this as a Judaica symbol, at the same time it is equally obvious that Russian officialdom was also not aware, even at this late date, that Jews considered the Magen David to have a particularly Jewish connotation..
