Volunteers are honored

The contributions of volunteers were recognized by two Vancouver organizations recently at their annual general meetings. Both the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver (JCC) and Beth Israel Synagogue took time at their AGMs to honor several people for their hard work and dedication to the community.
Giving to the centre
At the JCC meeting Nov. 19, President Awards were presented to Ruth Kraminsky, Sarah Sair, Mary Powell, Ruth Lubin, Gloria Chochinov, Sheila Gendi and Betty-Lou Phillips. As well, a special award was given to Perry Erhlich for his contribution to the development of the Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance! musical theatre program at the centre. Since its first season in 1994, more than 1,000 kids have gone through the program.
Kraminsky and Sair were recognized for their work at the Isaac Waldman Jewish Public Library. Kraminsky volunteers at the front desk and Sair, who has been with the library almost from die beginning in 1994, trains new volunteers.
Powell and Lubin have both been involved with the JCC's seniors programs. Powell has served as treasurer for the Golden Age Club, among other duties over her more than 10 years there. For some five years now, Lubin has been responsible for booking tlie artists for the monthly birthday parties.
Chochinov has volunteered in several capacities at the JCC and was awarded for her efforts in such endeavors as tlie adult education committee, the cultural arts committee and, most recently, she became chair of the annual Cherie Smith JCC Jewish Book Festival.
Gendi volunteers on an ongoing basis for both the lunch program offered by the Jewish Family Service Agency and the seniors lunch program at Beth
Tikvah Synagogue in Richmond. She has also helped with the annual Chutzpah! Festival, as has Phillips, who, in addition to vol-vmtcering for Chutzpnh! and the Norman Rothstein Theatre, volunteers regularly for other performing arts venues. ,

Volunteers were also honored at the annual general meeting of Beth Israel Synagogue Dec. 5.
Staff service awards were presented to Wolf Loop for six years of service, Steve Levin (six years) and Lee Harrison (eight years). David Rubin was recognized for his 45 years of dedication to Beth Israel, as Torah reader, teacher, minyan whip, keeper of the schnapps and prayer leader.
The President's Award for exceptional volunteer service was given to Bernard Uncyk, who has been at Beth Israel for almost 20 years, making sure that morning kiddush is always served.
There were five recipients of awards for special service: Nance Bass (women's league president, gift shop volunteer and other activities), Melissa Frackman (Unitr ed Synagogue Youth president, other youth programs and fimd-raising efforts), Moe Packer (for more tlian 10 years of involvment with Beth Israel's monthly Kolcinu), Paul Comisarow (for more than 10 years of involvment with Kolcinu) and Yvette Porte (for arranging greeters for the year, for sue years now).
Simcliali Torali honorees were Harry . Satanove and Rabbi Charles Feinberg, and Serge and Elinor Haber were recognized for their work in support of the spir-tual and ritual life of the congregation. Board of Directors Service Awards, which are given to retiring board members \vith six or more years of continuous service, were presented to Carole Liebcr-man and Gerri London. □
